Not quoting news article here, but what I find nice about this is that the Dodo was the just about the first ever bird to go extinct in historical (as opposed to prehistoric) times. Hundreds of bird species have gong extinct since, but the Dodo was just about the first.

The above skeleton is the most complete (I think) and is made up from bones of at least three different birds.

I’ve been trying for ages to find that out. Do you remember the “illo” from this episode?

I loved the Goodies when I was a kid. I look at an episode now and find it entirely cringeworthy.

The dodo was the world’s biggest pigeon. The Dodo’s closest living relative is the Nicobar pigeon.

I doubt that there’s enough DNA in those bones to sequence, but one can always hope – the Neanderthal died out much earlier.

The Dodo’s closest extinct relative is the Reunion Solitaire. The Dodo and the Reunion Solitaire skeletons compared, not to scale.
