Does such an item exist, and I mean cancelling all noise, so that one is temporarily deaf. Reason – Two days at the cricket in Adelaide and the noise is deafening from the sound system.

there are different types of noise cancelling headphones for different reasons. Mostly for , listening to music at lower levels than you would normally.. ie blocking out the ambient noise instead of turning up the music.

can unplug music, just use like that. Mine have 3.5mm plug on headset, so away with the cord.

You can get ear plugs made specially for such situations from an audiologist.

They are said to be good at cancelling out low pitch noise and are much less effective at higher pitch.

I can imagine they’d be useful in coping with the noise from sports event speakers.

I have a pair that cancel out ambient noise and they are really good, don’t realise all the annoying background noise until you turn them off.

My understanding is that ‘noise cancelling’ technology uses an external microphone to process the noise coming into the ear and creates noise at the same frequency out of phase with the original noise, thus cancelling the sound. This is ideal for constant, droning, back-ground noise, but not very effective at protecting the ears against very loud noise.

Modern ear plugs and ear muffs allow low pressure noise in (so you can still hear normal conversation) but block out high pressure noise like explosions and PA systems. You can buy them in varying ‘strengths’ (-10dB, -20 dB, and so on) according to your need. For long periods of very loud noise, I wear -20dB plugs inside -33dB ear muffs.

Hope that helps.

When faced with a centre full of unruly children, I just stick my fingers in my ears and sing “la la la!” for hours on end.

Ear plugs and ear muffs are better for variable and transient noises.

I have mid-range hearing loss, due to gunfire. We were supposed to have hearing protection (and it was provided) but there were times when you were just caught ‘off guard’.

You should learn ‘the Banana Splits theme’. It does the same thing, but it’s marginally less tiring.

Very sensible.

These are the go. Cut a piercing squeal at 94dB down to a gentle whisper at 60dB.

:-)

someone asked way back if they can do damage to ears

experience with ones I have, i’d think it possible when batteries are going flat, amplifier bounced around, generate a terrible distortion with high amplitude peaks.
