The other night, i asked for suggestions as to a reasonable price to ask at a market for an item that i’d made.

I have no experience in selling this stuff, so i wouldn’t know what’s reasonable.

People said “pics, please”, so i’ve got some now.

They can be found here:

If anyone with experience in selling (or buying) these sorts of things can offer advice, i’d appreciate it.

Very nice pieces there!

I have no advice other than toddle off to the markets to see similar items for sale, and ask the seller if they are secondhand or if they made them themselves.

start with the cost of the materials then put a value on the construction time and add little extra on top for your margin…

Reminds me very much of the trunks in Thief, many thousands of which I’ve opened with my lock picks and pilfered the contents.

It’s all recycled timber.

The big box is white pine from loading pallets. The smaller box is made from bed slats that were dumped at the local showground. Some of the coat/hat racks are American white oak, made from some wine barrel fragments found in a paddock. The other hat/coat racks are found timber, including a bit of silky oak flitch.

Yeah, the white one is done in that ‘weathered/distressed’ look that you see in the shops now. The varnished one is 415mm X 205mm X240mm.

I have several smaller jewel-box-size ones, too, but didn’t drag all of them out.

The key hanges btw $15-40 and the boxes probably from $120-180…is my guess

Depends on what kind of markets you’re going to, you’ll only know by trying, if they sell really quick, they were too cheap, if they don’t sell, too expensive;)

Don’t be surprised if you find it impossible to sell them at a price that actually makes it worthwhile making them, for anything other than love.

I can ask on my buy and sell group I suppose.
If I were you would work on a per hour basis. Ask yourself how fast you would make box number 10. Charge yourself out at $25/30 an hour and add material costs.
My brother has made a living out of woodbutchering for the longest time. He would buy old furniture, strip it and repurpose it. He would make stuff out of end bits. After a while people sought him out to do their projects.

(I think that white chest needs just a bit of sanding and high gloss varnish.)

Usual business pricing is something like price your labour and materials per unit, caculate costs of electricity and overheads like insurance/consumables over a year and divide by selling units then add your markup which is the market dependent bit.

My conundrum is that i don’t want to overprice them (i don’t want to lug them home again), but i don’t want to give them away to strangers, either.

I don’t place any value on time and labour – i’ve seen lots of wooden stuff at markets (bloody wooden trains!) which obviously has a big time/labour component in the price. Which is why you see the same stuff on the same stalls week after week.

So, i’d like a decent return but at a price by which people are tempted.

And, the location is Toowoomba.

Ah well … high ball and then gradually drop the price over a few weeks until you get nibbles.

If you do markets you can carry the stock at the price you value at it.until it drags you down. then you put a for sale ticket on it and replace the stock with something that makes you happier.

Toowoomba, cheers, problem is I had a use for a bigger trunk, that is to hold kindling and wood by the fire in the library and I liked the look of the smaller trunk (which I thought was the bigger one) but the bigger trunk doesn’t go with the colour scheme in there.

I was going to varnish the outside of it, but i thought i’d have a go at a different finish for a change.

I’ve learnt a bit from that one about making larger boxes, and the next ones i make will be slightly better and slightly quicker to produce. Definitely some varnish finishes there.

Ok you’ve given me motivation.

One reason i didn’t do the big one in varnish was that i didn’t have any of the corner straps available in a large size suitable for that box. The beachy/weathered/distreassed finish was better able to do without them.

I’ve ordered some bigger corner straps from China, and they should be here soon.

there is one local fellow making good money out of making chook houses from reclaimed materials. They are very handsome.

I was next to a couple of wood butchers at Salamanca in the 90s. One was a real butcher. Worked from recycled palings. He would always sell out of cheap things. Little shelves. Spice racks. Frames. And he made large boxes out of exterior doors. I am using one now as a coffee table this laptop sits on. The other guy was actually a carpenter. He was buying expensive reclaimed woods and making dressers and tables and such and making big bikkies.

50 bucks, nahh that would be ripping you off. With dimensions and weight there is an app at Oz post which you can plug in and get exact postage costs, for destination put in Maryborough Vic. If you can get the big trunk to look like the little trunk then I will be in it for 100 bucks plus postage…Unless postage costs are crazy town.

I’ve designed trunks like that, but for cutting out of card, folding and glueing together.

I don’t think my items are worth that much, but i’ll take your figures as being the extreme upper limit, and ponder further.

In your Flickr album, just click on “Download this photo” (bottom right corner), then View all Sizes. Then choose the size you want, right click on image (in Chrome) and click “Copy image address”. Then paste it in here with an exclamation mark on each end.

Don’t undervalue your work, mcgoon. These items are unique and once they appeal to the right buyers, they will be happy to pay the price you state. If they are heavy, charge much more than those prices above.

I knew someone who sold handmade cutting boards at a market, who gave up on it after a short time. Said that everyone wanted a bargain and didn’t appreciate the hours that went into his work. Not sure if markets are the right way to sell items like this; it might be better to put some items on consignment in a shop in a tourist area instead.

I’m aware that people often put a very big value on the ‘time and labour’ component, and how that can inhibit sales ( it certainly inhibits my buying).

So, i’m going to try to avoid that, and price ‘em to sell. Hell, if i hadn’t been making this stuff, i probably just would have been plotting the overthrow of democratic government in this country, anyway.

start with the cost of the materials then put a value on the construction time and add little extra on top for your margin…

I think that is a terrible way to find out the market price of something.

It sure is.

McGoon,

the products look great… depending on the region you live in and if you have a bit of a marketing budget the price might vary greatly..

As someone mentioned early on, you need to find yopur base costs. These include materials, labour, tool depeciation, electricity, cost of square metre of working area and storage etc. Then add a margin you are happy with. Remmber you may need to offer people invoices so allow a bit for stationary and the like.

Next you have options on how to market these things.. In the past I have imported large pieces of hand carved furniture from different parts of Asia. I have used many methods to sell them. Some things I have learnt. Pick of salt and all that.

-If you are near the capitol cities you will get a premium.

-Markets might work but country markets may not be worth it if you cannot sell to cover costs and margin.

-I have used large auction houses to great effect. The trick is to not flood the market… Do not give them 20 pieces to sell at a time.. Give them 1 or 2 at a weekly market to keep the items looking exclusive.

-Consigment in funky boutique places.. Negotiate a minimum price you need and what you are prepared to give them for using up their floor space etc. Agree on a sale price. If they can get a better price, negotiate on the split on any price they get for the product over and above the agreed original selling price.

- Second Hand furniture shops might be interested in them.

- Pawn one at Cash Converters… See what they would be willing to buy it for. Walk in the next week and see what they are selling it for.

-Chests of this size will cost a lot to ship if you do not have a transport contract… If you start moving a few of these. Talk to a transport broker or local freight company to get better courier deals.

All the best with it.. Great work. If I was in Oz still I would look to buy one..

If anyone with experience in selling (or buying) these sorts of things can offer advice, i’d appreciate it.

It’s so long since we bought our camphor wood chest that I can’t really give you a price. All I can say if that when we bought ours, there were two mass-produced brands and many custom made ones for sale. We chose the more expensive of the two mass-produced brands.

My immediate advice is to price your stuff at a higher price than all mass-produced versions, perhaps twice the price.

Trunks similar to the exposed wood one you’re selling tend to go for $500 to $800 on the web. Is there anything special about the wood (eg. rosewood, recycled)? Is there anything special about the style (eg. antique style, steamer trunk)? If so then then helps to push the price up. Some mass-produced chests are available for only $50 or so. I’ve no idea about the painted one.

Mass produced coat racks like the ones you’ve made tend to sell for $5 to $20. Perhaps you could try $30? I haven’t yet seen anything equivalent to what you’ve made, advertised on the web. If I wanted to buy something like that I’d go to a farmer’s market or craft market, the place with lots of little stalls.

Nice work, Cap’n.
I’ve started looking for a couple of wooden chests like these….little did I think I’d see them in this corner of the world.

I wanted a couple of them to use for the grandkids toys. And I’ve been telling them of my pirating days. So I want to casually drag out a nice wooden chest from the cupboard one day. Shame I seem to have mislaid my dubloons though.

I have one that’s so overly big I’ve never worn it in public, and I’m a large lad.

It frightens me to imagine the critter who’d find that shirt a comfortable fit.
