Subject: Samsung to "brick" Galaxy Note 7s

http://www.news.com.au/technology/gadgets/mobile-phones/next-update-will-brick-every-galaxy-note-7-left-in-the-wild-as-samsung-acts-to-stop-exploding-phones/news-story/fbcf428c7f181582d39a32d71b3f38bb

Notorious for exploding batteries, Galaxy Note 7s have stopped being produced and Samsung have issued a worldwide recall of the devices. They estimate 93% of phones were handed in. Next step: release a software update which will “brick” the phones i.e. render them unable to be charged and completely useless as a mobile device.

To my knowledge, this is the first time such a measure has been undertaken.

The remaining phones are dangerous, potential fire progenitors, fire hazards, shutting them down will help stop litigation as the cause of the fire with insurance claims

something like that

I reckon you could start a conspiracy about Apple being involved with the faulty phones

Up until last week there were still carriers advertising plans for the offending phones.

There have been some product recalls and disabling a service these were smart home devices

Google is deliberately deactivating some of its customers’ old smart-home devices

Internet Camera recall

IoT Device Maker Vows Product Recall, Legal Action Against Western Accusers

Cant seem to find any smartphone recalls other then the Galaxy Note 7

so yes it seems to be the first instance of smartphone bricking

Where does the word “Brick” originate?

from the middle eastern practice of “Camel Bricking”.

Where does the word “Brick” originate?

Probably from the old description of old and obsolete mobile phones being described as bricks, for their size and weight. Looking through old photos for example, and seeing someone with a large old model phone for example: “check out your old phone there Frank, it’s like the size of an old house brick”.

Hmm. A possible explanation. Like I told a bloke whose timing belt had broken at high revs. One second engine, next second boat anchor.

I notice that the video has someone deliberately turning over an over changing / overheating Galaxy Note 7 on a laptop?

Are they trying to claim a new laptop while holding a burning device on it?

and a public video presenting evidence off them holding the overheating device on the laptop

?

I’m prepared to give the benefit of the doubt without asking for photos to prove it.

It’s official: All major carriers will auto-brick the Samsung Galaxy Note 7

It’s official: All major carriers will auto-brick the Samsung Galaxy Note 7

It’s already happened in Australia, and now in the US as of Thursday, all major US cellular carriers have announced plans to remote-brick fire-catching Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphones. Verizon, the final holdout will issue an over-the-air software update on January 5 that will prevent the devices from both charging and connecting to cellular networks.

Holdouts, however, may have a tough time traveling over the holidays if they wait for the software update to hit their handsets. The FAA banned the phones from all flights in October.
