Supposedly when under the influence of alcohol your brain in incapable of laying down new memories so any actions you do when drunk (it doesn’t say how drunk) are not usually remembered afterwards. It could be why people claim not guilty when charged by police as they don’t actually remember misbehaving.

Another explanation is the need to reduce cognitive dissonance. Changing the interpretation of events to improve self-image.
