“alien planet” seems an odd term to use as a synonym for exoplanet. I mean all planets but Earth are alien planets.

Yes. Alien in this case is just shorthand.
I think weather has been seen on several Solar system planets.

Aren’t planets named after the parent star with an a,b,c,etc added
