Study finds one-third of people prone to ‘remembering’ false events

A recent study has found about one-third of people can, if prompted, ‘remember’ or at least believe events that never actually happened.

It is a confronting finding in an era when fake news is said to be proliferating online and has been blamed for influencing the recent US presidential election.

People also “remember” as having happened to them, things which they have only heard about.

consider the prospect of a mind that couldn’t make stuff up, and believe (to whatever degree) that it is true/real.

now there’s a troubling proposition.

taken to its extreme one might deny the mind exists, but be certain the ABC does.

I’m not sure if I remember the Japanese midget submarine attack on Sydney harbour when it happened or if I only remember it when it was talked about some time later.

I agree, there’s a standard psychological test that encourages people to remember false events. It was tried on a group of people coming out of a short period of sensory deprivation and everybody in the study showed some signs of remembering false events.
