Tradies in the Top End are being asked to volunteer for a study in measuring body temperature in an effort to prevent and treat heat stress. In the lead-up to wet season, the air is very humid and hot, so having a damp cloth next to the skin is ineffective as the humidity blocks evaporation and thus the body cannot cool. The study also aims to measure if drinking an icy cold beer helps or hinders the cooling process.
In very hot countries which play outdoor sports such as cricket, sportspeople can wear an ice vest to aid cooling the body. Is this something that could potentially solve the problem for tradies?
*As an aside, I read in one of Dr K’s books about a guy who was all hot and sweaty from mowing the lawn and drank a beer (or soft drink). The cold plus the bubbles burst his oesophagus. In my quick Google, the only thing I found about this was this but it analyses the case of a 57 year old woman. Perhaps drinking a beer to combat the heat is not such a good idea for hot, sweaty tradies.
