I have always had problems with eye drops especially those administered by others, (why do “they” always use a drop height of 30,000 feet?) then I discovered how to DIY, it is best to do it lying flat on your back, close the eye and run the dropper along your closed eye lashes squeasing the bulb as you go, this will wet your eye lashes, then just open your eye and the liquid runs gently into your eye, “voila”

I learnt that at an early age. It was because I would scream if anyone came near me with eye drops. (Bilateral squint repaired at 4 years old.)
(I was quite convinced at an early age that I was being tortured.)

Touching the dropper to the skin allows skin bacteria to get into the bottle. They can multiply in there – hence kii’s mention of contamination.

I agree that the Atomic Bomb Technique is a bad one. I show people that if you look in the mirror, pull your bottom eyelid out, you can make a lovely little cup to drop the drop into.

Also, the method described in the OP does not allow for dispensing of one or two drops. You have no idea how much you are squeezing out.

I have recently seen advertisements for an eye spray where you spray it on your closed eyes and then it probably runs into the eye upon opening. Not sure what the spray was for though…

It’s a lubricant. Some of the spray goes into the eye between the lids. Or more likely, when you actually open your eye.

A method for kids that I was told, which makes sense, is to lie the child on their back. Tell them they can keep their eyes closed and you are going to put the drops on the outside. Then wait for their curiosity to get the better of them and the drops on the outside go in when they open their eyes. Personally I wondered if you would be able to do it twice…..kids aren’t all that stupid really.

I can confirm that it does work twice, and helped me many times through conjunctivitis episodes.

I guess from the child point of view it is the lesser of two evils.

And it could be a good method for adults who hate the sword of Damocles feeling.

Skin bacteria getting into the eyes and intestinal tract during waterboarding is also a concern.

I can not DIY eye drops.
I must have someone drop them in, and from the further the better.

Who would have thought putting eye-drops in could be so complicated. Never had a problem putting them in myself.
