This may be the first and only time we ever get a close-up look at the material from Saturn’s rings. One of the great mysteries of the Solar System.
https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap170103.html

The moon Pandora orbits within Saturn’s rings, shepherding its provocatively named F ring. As a result, it’s been gently sandblasted by nearby particles from Saturn’s F ring. Some of the particles have ended up settling in Pandora’s craters. Pandora is 283 km long, and the dust and smoothing ought to allow calculation of the colour, size, and hardness of the ring particles.

Images like this are only possible as Cassini gets bolder, taking more risks prior to the end of its life.

I was waiting with my son yesterday, he was giving me the usual barage of questions about Mario Bros and the life of Jar Jar when he suddenly got a bit medical.
-“How come when a baby is in a woman’s tummy it looks like this?” (Does an impersonation of a late term fetus)
“Well there’s not much room so it needs to be folded up pretty well.”
-“And how come twins look like this?” (hard to describe what he did)
“Well then it is even more crowded and they need to be close together.”
-“And use their mother’s looking?”
“…”
-“Can they see?”
“There’s not a lot to see in there.”
-“So they use their mother’s looking?”
-”…I don’t…”
-“How can granddad be dead?”
“Well everyone dies eventually. “
-“That’s what’s making me gulping. Is granddad turned to dust?”
“Not yet, that will take a long time.”
-“How long can someone turn to dust?”
“I dunno … at least twenty years I suppose in an ordinary coffin. The coffin is the box they put the dead person in.”
-“Why do they close their eyes?”
“So it isn’t spooky.”
-“So do they use someone else’s looking?”
“What?”
-“Like a baby in the tummy uses the mother’s looking and a dead man uses someone else’s looking?”
“… The dead bodies don’t see things.”
-“What’s a wreath?”
“It’s a ring of leaves that sometimes people put on a coffin.”
-“Like in an abyss?”
“I mean the coffin is in a kind of rectangular hole in the ground … not really an abyss. Where did you get the word abyss from?”
-“So how can people be old after they turn to dust in 20 years?”
“I mean people can live 80 years, 90 years … someone lived 120 years. But AFTER they die they turn to dust after 20 years.”
-“That’s what I’m afraid of. What’s Darth Maul’s music called?”

Is Pi Infinite?

Date: 01/29/98 at 20:54:12
From: Maggie
Subject: Does pi ever turn into zeros and ones?

I’m immensely curious about pi. How can we know that is is infinite?
Does it ever turn into a pattern of zeros and ones, like a computer
code?

Please help. Thank you.

Date: 01/30/98 at 11:55:28
From: Doctor Wilkinson
Subject: Re: Does pi ever turn into zeros and ones?

A mathematician named Lambert in the nineteenth century showed that pi
is not a rational number. This means it is not the quotient of two
integers. You may know, for example, that 22/7 is an approximation to
pi. (355/113 is a much better one). But Lambert’s theorem shows that
neither of these approximations is exact. Because pi is irrational,
the decimal expansion of pi cannot come to an end, and it cannot
repeat either.

In 1882, another mathematician named Lindemann proved much more. He
showed that you can’t write an equation with integral coefficients
that has pi as a solution. For exmaple, the square root of 10 is a
rough approximation to pi, but Lindemann’s theorem shows that it
cannot be exact.

Lindemann’s theorem also shows that a very famous ancient problem
called “squaring the circle” is impossible. Squaring the circle means
finding the side of a square whose area is equal to the area of the
circle with a given radius, if all you are allowed to use is a compass
and a straightedge. This problem had puzzled people since the ancient
Greeks.

In answer to your second question, it is of course possible to
represent pi in binary notation, as a string of 0’s and 1’s. Lambert’s
theorem again shows that this string cannot come to an end or repeat.
But your question seems to refer to the ordinary decimal
representation. That is, you want to know if the decimal

3.14159265358979….

eventually leads to just a string of 0’s and 1’s. The answer to this
question is that nobody knows, but most mathematicians would be
extremely surprised if this turned out to be so. Pi has been
calculated to about 50 billion decimal places, and so far all the
digits from 0 to 9 appear just about equally often.

You live oin Pern?

raining threads.

Pern being a fictitious planet that is rained upon by threads, a life form from a nearby planet that each close pass was able to send the life form from that planet(the red star) to rain upon Pern. Each thread could burn the life out of any life it touched.

Dragonflight takes place in the far future on Pern, a planet colonized by humans. The colonists had originally intended to gradually adopt a low-technology agrarian lifestyle, but were forced to move more quickly after they encountered the deadly Thread raining down from the sky. By harnessing and riding the indigenous, flying, fire-breathing dragons (with genetic alterations to make them larger and telepathic), the colonists destroyed the Thread in the skies over Pern, creating pockets of safety over its surface, before it was able to burrow into the land and breed. Humanity finally managed to find equilibrium and began to create a thriving culture, society, and economy, eventually expanding right across Pern’s northern continent. However, when this narrative begins, an unusually long interval between Thread attacks has caused the general population to dismiss the threat as myth and gradually withdraw support from the Weyrs where dragons are bred and trained. By the time of this narrative, only one Weyr remains (the other five having mysteriously disappeared at the same time in the last quiet interval), maintaining a precarious existence.

Dragons are telepathic and are capable of forming a lifelong bond with one particular human in a process called Impression. Tradition, established thousands of years before the narrative, dictates that selected young humans with empathetic and telepathic talents are taken to the Hatching Grounds as candidates for Impression. The dragons come in several colors which generally correlate with their sizes; blue males, green females, brown males, bronze males, and golden females – queens. Bronzes, the largest males, are by tradition the only ones who compete to win the queens in their mating flights. The green females are banned from breeding as they produce only small, less talented dragons. The golden queens are not only the largest dragons, they also hold a subtle control over their dragon communities Weyrs

Quality of writing is very variable. Some of the dragonflight books are superb and some are abysmal.
McCaffrey’s books are best when the plot follows a single strong female character: Sassenak (Sassenak), Survivors (Lunzie), Crystal Singer (Killashandra), Ship who sang (Helva), etc. I also like Voorloper, which follows a teenage boy and girl.

My favourite dragonflight book is actually displaced sideways from the main kings and queens plot thread. It follows Menolly.

“Menolly grew up in Half-Circle Sea Hold, where she helped the Hold harper, Petiron (Robinton’s father), wrote songs, and dreamed of becoming a harper. Her parents, Yanus and Mavi, grudgingly allowed her to continue teaching the local children music after Petiron died as their community had no other harper, but refused to permit her to sing once the replacement harper came, much less become a harper in her own right as they believed it was not right for mere girls to do such things.

“Menolly ran away from home and found refuge in a cave, where she Impressed nine fire-lizards: gold Beauty, bronzes Rocky and Diver, browns Mimic, Lazybones, and Brownie, blue Uncle, and greens Auntie One and Auntie Two.

“Menolly was rescued from Threadfall by brown dragonrider T’gran and brought to Benden Weyr. After the Hatching feast, she was finally discovered by Masterharper Robinton as the apprentice Petiron mentioned in messages to the Harper Hall and was allowed to fulfill her dream of becoming a harper (Dragonsong).”

Major mistranslation throughout Aesop’s Fables. Every appearance of “Donkey” should real “Hyena”. The two were confused by the translator because they both have an asinine laugh, so both have been called “ass”.

So where the fable says “the lion and the donkey went out hunting together”, etc.

All you have proven by admission is that you have a similar mind in regard to what McAffery wrote that you liked.
I enjoyed the Helva and Killishandra and the fire lizards of Menolly.

New question. This is a QI style question, the obvious answer is always wrong and I’ll accept four different answers as correct.

How high is Fukushima?

Excellent. I’ll add those to the wrong answers.

For the accepted answers, Fukushima is also the name of a prefecture, a city, a Japanese surname, and an Antarctic peak.
