not sure it happens, but with say government stuff (tax, centrelink, whatever), if ‘em’re (offshore call centres) not australian citizens(people operating them) and not located in australian territories, is an australian citizen obliged to grant them any legitimacy and authority (under law) in handling any of their (an australian citizens’) business?

perhaps related, of overseas security/intelligence agencies, activities relating to citizens of australia, for the australian government.

similarly there’re commercial interests that cross the borders of nation-states.

(shrugs) If you are calling a call centre, you are probably doing it to get help or fix something. You don’t have to grant them legitimacy or authority, you just need them to help you.

If you were contacted and which placed you under obligation, I would imagine that even if they were outside Australia, but were under contract to an Australia organisation, then they would be their agent and have some authority. However, any action would probably have to be taken by the Australian organisation, otherwise international legal problems would make it too complicated and/or uneconomical.

I just hang up on them telling them unpolitely to fuck off as the phone goes down.

If you receive a call from someone representing the ATO, there might be negative repercussions to hanging up without receiving the information. The caller doesn’t care, the ATO doesn’t care. You’ll be the only one who suffers.

I had a genuine call from an Asian accented ATO woman.
It seemed so suss at first that I told the caller that I have a frequency based hearing difficulty & asked if I could speak to an unaccented male. I was transferred without difficulty.
