way back (though still same in small communities) when someone wronged you, you could catch up with them somewhere or be on their doorstep and have it out with them, speak the ancient language or whatever. The chiefs of tribes faced this too, and it served to limit status and misuses of (social leveling).

what though of today, the modern world with social media.

is it working, or do we face a decline in the quality of leadship because the jobs have become so unattractive.

I see the time that politicians and other spend on the media (not just social media) as wasted time. Time when they’re not working on things that matter. Ditto parliamentary debates and campaigning. They’re not actually doing anything valuable.

In “the moon is a harsh mistress” the idea is floated that perhaps the person selected a leader should be the least popular person because that way they’d be willing to make the necessary unpopular decisions.

The qualities needed for being a boss and being a leader are quite different. Perhaps what we need for our leader in not a leader, but a good boss.

Leadership carries with a lot of jealousy. Which can (and did in Rome) lead to a low life expectancy for leaders.

Does the prospect of being assassinated lead to a low quality of applicant? I think it does. Does media exposure reduce life expectancy? I think it does.

In the original radio series of “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”, Douglas Adams put forward the idea that those who want to be ruler of the universe are the least qualified for the job.
