New data shows 85% of humans live under a corrupt government

“Corruption” is defined by Transparency International (TI) as “the abuse of entrusted power for private gain.” Each year since 1995, TI has published a Corruption Perceptions Index that scores the world’s nations out of 100 for their public sector honesty and the just-released 2016 report paints the same bleak picture we’ve been seeing now for two decades … except it’s getting worse.

A bit alarming that there are some 185 governments more corrupt than ours

I’m a tad surprised that Japan is at #20.

WTF, Hong Kong doesn’t have a government.

There’s another subtle factor here – this is not an index of corruption – this is an index of the perception of corruption, which is not necessarily the same thing.

I’ve seen something like this before. From memory, Australia has slipped down the list and the UK has moved up. I wonder if I can dig it out.

This link gives the same table from 2013. https://www.transparency.org/cpi2013/results
Back then, Australia ranked equal 9th and the UK ranked 14th. I’ll see if I can copy some of the table. No, but here are counties in order for the top 20 from the year 2013.

Denmark

New Zealand

Finland

Sweden

Norway

Singapore

Switzerland

Netherlands

Australia

Canada

Luxembourg

Germany

Iceland

United Kingdom

Barbados

Belgium

Hong Kong

Japan

United States

Uruguay
