While reading the article in a recent thread, I came across a link to the following article:
Men who buy sex have much in common with sexually coercive men
In this article, it was said:
article said:
“We hope this research will lead to a rejection of the myth that sex buyers are simply sexually frustrated nice guys,” said Melissa Farley, the study’s lead author and executive director of Prostitution Research and Education, a San Francisco-based nonprofit.
It would seem that she got the result that she was hoping for.

“However, given the significant levels of sexually aggressive attitudes and behavior found in sex buyers, a more progressive legal policy would be like that seen in Sweden and Norway, where prostitution is understood as a predatory crime against economically and ethnically marginalized women,” she said. “The Nordic model arrests sex buyers but decriminalizes those in prostitution and provides them with exit services.”
Non sequitur.

It’s complicated. There are sex workers who are positive about their jobs, but also sex workers who are being exploited and who would rather be doing something else.
As for their customers, I agree with party_pants that it seems odd there’s still a demand in this day & age.

OK, let’s split men who buy sex into two groups.
1. Nice guys who can’t get enough.
2. Nasty guys with a disgusting fetish.
Problem solved.

It is apparently the oldest profession.
Not that I’ve ever partaken of the wares provided.
I’m reminded of a line in a Bushwhackers song. “walking streets and wedding rings are sometimes much the same”.

I’m afraid that is probably too simplistic an approach that in proprtion isn’t simplistic enough.
John Cleese reckoned it cost him 20 million.

seriously??
The thing about buying sex is that it’s simple and it’s readily available (probably more now than ever before). It offers people a way to have sex without a need for any ‘effort’ on their side… no going out, no small talk, no bars or dinner dates… just hand over your cash monies and get the service you paid for.

It’s an industry ripe for exploitation and abuse regardless of if its legal or not, but you’d probably be much better of as a sex worker in a first world nation than some poor women forced into it in poor nation.

having spent a considerable amount of time in SEA, I can tell you there is a very large demand for a sex industry…

It seems that I’m out of date on this.
I was surprised to see that it is illegal to buy sex in Nordic countries, but not to sell it, but Bing tells me that it is now also illegal in Canada, which I find really surprising.
I suppose the old laws, where buying was legal, but selling illegal, were even worse, but I can’t see how a modern supposedly free democratic country can make a financial arrangement between two consenting adults illegal when it has no effect on anybody else.
I also greatly doubt that making it illegal to buy sex does anything to benefit the women (or male prostitutes for that matter).

Yes but you can do the same via geosocial networking without having to pay anyone. But I suppose some people just prefer to pay, and there’s likely to be uneven demand re male-female sex.

It’s an ideological thing. Anti-sex-work campaigners aren’t interested in the views of sex workers, who understandably favour decriminalisation and regulation.

I dare say this is a complex issue. On one hand the sex-workers don’t want the law interfering with their income, but on the other hand there are broader issues about how prostitution could negatively affects society as a whole. My gut feeling is that it is probably something that is going to happen anyway even if illegal, so it is better that it is legal so that it can be regulated and taxed so that the government can afford to cover George Christensen’s lunch, but I’m not a sociologist.

Sex workers don’t just do intercourse. Some men just want a “girlfriend experience”. Some want intimacy. Some want to talk. Some want what their wives/girlfriends won’t do. It’s a varied world of sex work.
