Subject: Beans problem

Hi Everyone
I have a problem with beans and I also think it’s the same problem with my Eggplants.
Have a look at the leaves

Can anyone tell me what this is and will it still be ok to save seeds or am I best to just get rid of everything?

you talking about the silvery traces on the leaves? Looks like insect damage or something. Maybe white fly or something. But otherwise they are looking pretty healthy and if they were mine I probably wouldn’t be worrying too much about it. Keep the water up and some seasol to boost the plants resistance.

If there are no insects or fine webbing visible, it could be powdery mildew.
Spray with
2 teasp bicarb
2 drops veg oil
2 drops dishwashing liquid
in 1 L water.

Does the milk and water treatment also work for this?

It’s supposed to but I haven’t had any luck with it. I found out yesterday you need to use full cream fresh milk 1:9. I have tried it but used UHT milk which apparently is no good for it.

Ok that gives me some sort of help. I’ll check the back of the leaves tomorrow and take it from there. There’s not much actual bean production going on, so they could be just running out of steam. So what’s left I will salvage the seed.

I often use full cream milk.. it is useless using low fat milk because it is the fat you want to use as the insecticide.

Temperatures are often a problem with beans.

+++++++++++++
if they’ve produced a fair crop and have grown to maturity, i’d say they have just reached the end of their run. The leaves just look to me like they’re old and succumbing to the standard assaults prior to finishing up. They get mildews and mites etc when they’re past it. Might be time for another crop in another bed.
