Are these now issued in numerical/and alphabetical order or random order?

They are issued in numerical/alphabetical order unless you specifically order a custom plate for more money. There are many types of custom plates, but three of the most common are:
1. Plates starting with V. These are “European style” number plates.
2. Custom plates in which you can have any combination of numbers and letters.
3. “Advanced” number plates where you order the standard numbering system but well in advance of where the numerical/alphabetical order should be. The people who do this, do it to cheat on their car manufacture date by making it appear that their car is a more recent model than it actually is.

I find the new system of number/letter/letter – number/letter/letter much harder to memorize than the old letter/letter/letter – number-number-number. We had to make up a name for my car so I can remember it…it involves a bitch and some evil owls. And Mr buffy’s involves gay sailors and zany queers.

Totally agree. Number-2 letter-number-2 letter is a bitch. The current NSW number plate system is much better. 2 letter-2 number-2 letter. In my cynical moments I wonder whether the Vic number plate system has been made as bad as possible deliberately, to force Victorians to spend much more money to get personalised plates.

In order to remember my number plate I change numbers 1 to I and 3 to E, to get a meaningless word. mrs m cannot remember it at all.
