Apparently:
“John Schumann is one of the very few songwriters who has changed the way a nation thinks. “
Quite an achievement, since nations do not think.

Referring to the people of a nation by the term “nation” is a form of metonymy, in this case synecdoche.

I disagree with your disagreement.
The governments of countries might be said to behave in a certain way, or even to think in a certain way (although I wouldn’t say that myself), but to talk of a nation thinking implies that all the people of a nation have a certain way of thinking, and that I vehemently disagree with.
We (other than one fictitious person in The Life of Brian) are all different.

I don’t actually know what those words mean, but my statement is true both applied to the abstract concept of a “nation”, and to the combined population of a nation. The individuals all think, but the combined population of a nation do not think as one entity.

It doesn’t matter whether you agree with the statement; your criticism was with the use of the term “nation” to refer to the people of the nation; my reply illustrates that it is a valid figure of speech. I suggest you look up those words; you might learn something.

No, my criticism was not with the use of the term “nation” to refer to the people of a nation.
My criticism was with the notion that the people of a nation think as one, which would be necessary to change the way a nation thinks.
As for learning the meaning of the words, I won’t remember them, so there is little point.

Yes, clearly I’ve misinterpreted your comments. Sorry I assumed you meant what you wrote. I still disagree with what what you now say you mean; it’s quite possible to change the way the people of a nation think, even though they don’t all think the same way (either before the change or after.)

I did mean what I wrote. The “as one” was clearly implied in my first post, and clearly stated in my response to ian.

I suppose that’s true if we want to be hyper-literal, but the original quote implies that all (or the great majority) of the population of one nation (namely Australia) had their thinking changed in a similar way by the words of a song or songs, and I don’t believe that to be true.

Max Gillies impersonating Bob Hawke. “My fellow Australians” was his catch-cry in that persona. Even though it is something the real Bob Hawke never said very often.
A bit like Steve Vizard’s character impersonating Deryn Hinch always said “shame, shame, shame”. Hinch himself never said it (deliberately) and used to bristle when people attributed it to him.

Okay well my answer is Henry Parkes, who might have been the first to use the phrase during a political speech.
Ok, start again….
I think that I ever told of how I heckled a red swilling NSW premier, and shortly thereafter he resigned.
