Paging Mr Rule 303. We have been a bit tardy about getting set up with a digital listening set and obviously our Old Faithful analogue is pretty dead. Mr buffy spoke to a local CFA member about buying through the CFA but nothing much has happened. Do you have any advice? I found this by a Google search..comments?

Not yet. Mr buffy will have another chat with our local captain first. If at all possible we’d prefer to support our local brigade.

Oh, and one of the reasons we don’t have one is because when the local brigade got their allocation, CFA central didn’t even supply sufficient numbers for the number of brigade members here. So there were no excess ones to sell. Hopefully that has now changed.

I need a set for the redoubt, but not just a listening one, the farmers in the valley talk to each other by two way sets.

So you need a base station and then that $60 thingy with the programming. But you need one relevent to your state, not mine.

:)

i’d guess the equipment these days is quite limited distribution, partly because it (requires and) involves specialist programming for the users. Dunno.

doubt with digital it is sorta open like the old days of analogue.

various security and privacy reasons. Back in the bad old days you could listen to all the analogue mobile phone conversations from the near towers, have it check the police channels as well while doing that, there was no privacy at all with anything radio.

terrible really.

No, it’s open and available. You can do it online from the CFA site if you want. I’d rather have a set sitting on the shelf in the kitchen.

If you have a listening set you can hear the callouts and what the trucks are saying to each other. The night the shop across from mine in Hamilton burnt, we knew because it was on the listening set. Which alerted us to go to Hamilton and watch, ready to move stuff out if it spread to directly across. And when there are fires close you know where, exactly, they are.
