Thanks, DA, for my bit of learning today.

Pumpkins, zucchinis, marrows, ornamental gourds, kumi kumi and the many kinds of squash are all cultivars of the same species, Cucurbita pepo. It was one of the first non-grain vegetables domesticated.

That, I mostly knew. This I didn’t.

The bitter taste in cucumbers (and other cucurbits) is a potentially deadly cytotoxin.

The trouble is that it requires so many cucumbers to produce useful concentrations of cytotoxin.

Looking up web.

The Cucurbitaceae, also called cucurbits and the gourd family, are a plant family consisting of around a hundred genera, the most important of which are:

Cucurbita – squash, pumpkin, zucchini, some gourds
Lagenaria – mostly inedible gourds
Citrullus – watermelon (C. lanatus, C. colocynthis) and others
Cucumis – cucumber (C. sativus), various melons
Luffa – the common name is also luffa, sometimes spelled loofah (when fully ripened, two species of this fibrous fruit are the source of the loofah scrubbing sponge)

There is debate about the taxonomy of the genus, as the number of accepted species varies from 13 to 30.
The five domesticated species are Cucurbita argyrosperma, C. ficifolia, C. maxima, C. moschata, and C. pepo.

Right, but note this isn’t a family. It is a species.

It was a species. Now it is a heap of hybrids.

It is a species, which contains several cultivars.

cultivars are natural hybrids or complete mutations.
