NASA funding will be fairly stable this year, with a 0.8% reduction in spending, but there are some unfortunate cancellations.
The Asteroid Redirect Mission, which was to direct an asteroid into lunar orbit where it could be studied by astronauts, has been cancelled.
The Europa Lander has been removed from the forward budgets. However, a Europa flyby mission (the Europa Clipper) has retained funding.
In an unsurprising move, Earth Science is taking a 13% cut. In particular, a number of satellites are being defunded, including the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DISCOVR), stationed at the Sun-Earth L1 Lagrange point 1.5 million km away. This seems like a great waste after only a couple of years in operation and hopefully some other agency will pick up its running costs.
The entire NASA Office of Education has also been scrapped. There will be a 27% reduction in the aeronautics budget.
There’s been an increase in funding for the manned space program (Space Launch System and Orion capsule).
