Heck, it could the Althea all over again. This is the track of cyclone Althea.

“Severe Tropical Cyclone Althea was at the time considered to be one of the strongest cyclones to affect the Queensland coast, and remains arguably the most intense cyclone to ever affect Townsville. There were three deaths in Townsville and damage costs in the Townsville region reached $50 million (1971 dollars). Many houses were damaged or destroyed (including 200 Housing Commission homes) by the winds. On Magnetic Island 90 per cent of the houses were damaged or destroyed. Two tornadoes damaged trees and houses at Bowen.”

Cyclone Debbie will be category 4 at landfall. Landfall 1 pm, March 28, two days away.

I remember Althea. I was in Proserpine and the Whitsunday passage, Bowen region late in 1970 so it made an impact on my memory as the people had said that we hope this new house excapes the next cyclone. I paid particular attention to the places that were damaged.

We were just watching that earlier.

The winds we had here the other day were really strange to watch on this site. I should have taken a screen shot or something. We had winds coming from both the west and the east, then blowing straight up to the NW. It looked like someone’s hair part.

The map shows southerly winds here but it is totally still & windless at ground level (850 metres).

Some people are comparing Debbie to cyclone Yasi. Yasi at category 5 was more powerful than Debbie, but hit a less populated area. One dead, which is fewer than Althea. Yasi caused an estimated AU$3.5 billion in damage, making it the costliest tropical cyclone to hit Australia on record. it made landfall further north, near Mission Beach. Jan 2011.

Yasi’s track.

The late ones do tend to stay more northerly though, thinking also of Yasi here. The one thing my dad said about ctclones when I asked when would it rain again in 1967, dad said, “when a cyclone comes onto land. That’s where we get most of the rain events inland”. He died in the year of Althea but I was reminded again of his comment in 1974 when Wanda wet the inland thouroughly.

Probably the least safe place if there is extensive flooding inland.

Still on track for Ayr, I see. My sister used to live in Ayr.

The links to the track on this thread update with time.
Also, the cyclone prediction on WindyTV https://www.windytv.com/?-19.228,149.941,5 updates with time.

I see that they’ve changed the prediction quite considerably. It’s the same prediction crossing the coast and moving inland. But when I first posted the link, the tropical low petered out inland in the middle of Queensland. The new prediction has the tropical low turning around and heading back for the coast in a track very like Althea, before petering out at the coast.

Cyclone Debbie should:
a) Stir up the surface waters on the Great Barrier Reef, cooling them down and so stopping coral bleaching for a while (it’s happened before).
b) Dump a lot of water in the interior of Australia, cooling down the continent to remove the blocking high over central Australia. That in turn will allow further rain events to penetrate better into the heartland of Australia, which will be good for farmers for a while.

I can’t help wondering if the link between “Southern Oscillation Index” SOI and rainfall is actually cyclones like Debbie. It would work like this.

“Sustained positive values of the SOI above +7 are typical of a La Niña episode. They are associated with warmer sea temperatures to the north of Australia.” Warmer sea temperatures off Northern Australia create more cyclones like Debbie. Cyclones like Debbie penetrate into the interior of Australia dumping water which removes the blocking high over central Australia. Without the blocking high over central Australia, cold fronts and troughs generated over the Indian Ocean penetrate deeper into the heart of Australia bringing more rain to southern farms.

In other words, chuck the SOI observations in the bin and watch the cyclones.

Nothing on a cyclone but it’s blowing to blow a dog off a chain here. Apart from a few still hard peaches, plums, pears, apples and nectarines are mostly on the ground.

Plums, peaches, nectarines and some apples all finished some weeks ago. Should only really be the late peaches (the yellow fleshed ones) and the late apples on the trees.

Should amend my previous, it was badly worded, what I meant was that apart from a few still hard peaches everything else is on the ground.

Funny. In the bush the saying is blow a dog of its chain. On the coast its blow the oysters off the rocks.

A bit if wind, but fairly mild here. Wouldn’t even blow a mouse off a chain.

Where would it be based?
Maybe a cheaper idea would be to make bag frames so bags could be filled using a backhoe.

Those sand bag filling things need to be all over the place. During the floods last year in this district, the bag filler arrived at Coleraine a bit late….they sent it straight on to Casterton, who were next to get wet, because Coleraine did theirs by hand. And the thing arrived just as they finished shovelling several tonnes of sand. (There may have been a slight exaggeration on the part of the man who told me, who was one of the shovellers. They were not happy)

So it’s already a category 4. The previous prediction I saw had it staying category 3 until just before landfall. Landfall now just south of Bowen. Thankfully it’s not going straight through either Townsville or Mackay.

The track is well south of both Althea and Yasi.

How does the new track compare with that of Cyclone Kerry? Landfall is almost exactly the same place, but Kerry was weaker (category 2 at first landfall strengthening to 3 immediately afterward) and headed north after first landfall rather than inland and south.

How far inland in the latest predictions, and where will it go back out to sea? Back out to sea near Fraser Island on Friday, Gold Coast will get a battering on Sat & Sunday. Far enough inland to dump water into the Lake Eyre and Murray-Darling catchments I hope.

Any flooding predictions for the Darling River yet? No.

The following Watches/Warnings are current:
Moderate Flood Warning for the Don River
Moderate Flood Warning for the lower Isaac River
Moderate Flood Warning for the Pioneer River
Flood Watch for coastal catchments between Rollingstone to Gladstone extending inland to the upper Flinders, upper Thomson and Barcoo catchments

As of 9am, the outer edge of the severe winds are just reaching Proserpine, minor damage there so far. Hamilton Island is in the middle of it, no word out of there in the news media but the winds there fast, and they’ve got at least another five hours of being battered. The track is scheduled to head just south of Bowen, closer to Bowen than Proserpine. I don’t have wind records for Bowen.

I sat through the “tail end” of a cyclone in 1982/83. On Straddie. I was about 8 weeks pregnant. Branded by a bluebottle earlier in the day. I was in a nylon tent.

With my mother.

Interestingly, rain and water vapour from cyclones has a distinct isotopic signature, with most of the oxygen-18 isotopes rained out because of the intense convection of the event and how high the molecules rise within the storm.

Using the chemical record within limestone and other sources, Professor Nott and other scientists have been able to show that cyclones are now the fewest in at least 800 years for the Cairns region and 1500 years for Western Australia. (See Nature paper here.)

“We’ve already been able to show that climate change is already affecting the behaviour of tropical cyclones in Australia,” Professor Nott said.

the record amount of hot days in NSW in a row might be one thing that might be a proof…

A cyclone needing warm water to start its thing..doesn’t necessarily correlate to climate change.

I hope the news is not bad tomorrow.

I sat through the “tail end” of a cyclone in, um, sometime between 1983 and 1987. On Bribie. That was frightening enough even though it was considered so mild that it never made the news. It was the continuous nature of the strong wind that was disturbing, unchanging for hour after hour until I felt that something must break.

Bowen mean 82 km/hr peak 107 km/hr
Hay Point mean 72 km/hr peak 96 km/hr
Mackay mean 69 km/hr peak 91 km/hr

Bowen mean 91 km/hr peak 124 km/hr
Hay Point mean 72 km/hr peak 82 km/hr
Mackay mean 67 km/hr peak 83 km/hr, is that all? The wind speed hasn’t gone up significantly since 2 am.
Cape Ferguson mean 44 km/hr peak 50 km/hr
Ayr mean 46 km/hr peak 65 km/hr
Townsville – just an ordinary average day.

Not nearly as bad as I expected at this time of day. The news is one person dead.

You can toggle between various options (including air and ocean) in earth nullschool on the menu which pops up when you press e on your keyboard.

That’s interesting. 850 HPa is the height at which winds circle the cyclone, they spiral in at lower latitudes and spiral out at higher altitudes.

What’s that in furlongs?

850 hPa level is roughly at 1.5 km.

About 7.5 furlongs then.

the record amount of hot days in NSW in a row might be one thing that might be a proof…

A cyclone needing warm water to start its thing..doesn’t necessarily correlate to climate change.

I hope the news is not bad tomorrow.

Deeper and therefore cooler water off NSW.

Looks mild to me, a few trees and power lines down, a few sheets of galvanized iron ripped off. I’ve been through worse than that in Sydney and Melbourne.

Proserpine maximum mean and peak wind speeds were 109 and 165 km.hr.

109 km/hr sustained speed is only Category 2.
109 km/hr is only 30 m/s, not enough to cause any damage.
.
165 km/hr is 45 m/s, which would be enough to cause damage in Sydney or Melbourne, but structures in cyclone zones don’t start to get damaged until you get above 50 m/s.

Just confirming that, by comparing different cyclone wind scales. For coastal locations, Debbie never exceeded Category 2. Only on the Whitsunday Islands did it exceed that. Peak speeds at Proserpine were 100 km/hr less than on Hamilton Island, and force is proportional to the square of the wind speed.

Wind is a fickle thing.

This is the best they can do for Qld flood warnings so far.

http://www.bom.gov.au/cgi-bin/wrap_fwo.pl?IDQ20890.html

Widespread river level rises above the minor flood level are expected across the Flood Watch area from Tuesday onwards. Major flooding is likely.

Heavy rainfall associated with Severe Tropical Cyclone Debbie will continue, with widespread 24 hour totals of 150-250 mm. Significantly higher totals are possible locally, particularly in the coastal catchments within the Flood Watch area.

Very heavy rainfall will also lead to localised severe flash flooding in areas close to the path of Severe Tropical Cyclone Debbie.

Catchments at risk within the Flood Watch area from Tuesday include:

Lower Burdekin, Don, Proserpine, Pioneer and Connors-Isaac Rivers. Separate flood warnings are in force for some of these catchments.

As the rainfall moves further inland the catchments at risk from Wednesday include:

Fitzroy, Belyando and Suttor (Burdekin River catchment), upper Thomson and upper Barcoo Rivers.

Rainfall is expected to extend into south east Queensland during Thursday, with widespread rainfall totals of 50-150 mm possible. The following catchments are likely to be at risk of flooding:

Warrego, Condamine-Balonne, Moonie, Weir, Macintyre, Calliope, Boyne, Baffle, Kolan, Cherwell-Burrum, Burnett, Mary, Noosa, Maroochy, Mooloolah, tributaries of the lower Brisbane, and Logan and Albert.

Note that forecast rainfall totals are dependent on the exact track of the tropical system, particularly from Thursday onwards.

Ex-Debbie

We’ve already got predictions of very heavy rain for Thursday and Friday and a flood watch.

“A cold front moving through NSW during Thursday will interact with moisture from Tropical Cyclone Debbie, leading to widespread rain over the state’s east. Particularly heavy rain is expected in parts of the northeast on Thursday, likely continuing into Friday as a low pressure trough deepens near the Queensland border.”

I was watching the ‘current’ wind/wind gust numbers on WeatherZone for the coastal regions but they never seemed to correlate to any sort of reality.

from their webpage:

Experienced meteorologists staff our office from 4:15am to 8pm daily to provide continuous and accurate coverage of the evolving weather issues across the country.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) supplies weather information and The Weather Company converts this information into computer ready data, specialised forecasts, TV or web ready graphics and scripts. For more information on all our content sources, click here.

I wish I could say I is doing well…can’t find reliable, stable, decent income providing job/work
The last time I worked in my “trade” (electronics tech) was 2007 and my gross income was $35k…and that was slightly above State Award….since then the best I could achieve was $52k (2014) in customer service…but was then made redundant.

Land and houses are cheaper here in Cairns than Brissy and significantly cheaper than Sydney/Melbourne but are still out of reach.

Stuck renting a shoe box :(
I don’t need or want a McMansion, but don’t want to live in one of those ‘ant farm’ residential developments either.
I’m a simple man, really. Just want a little patch of dirt to call my own, to escape the rat race…but that dream evaporated years ago…..
Makes it harder being on my own, as I don’t have a partner to pool resources.
What Aussie woman would want a man my age who has nothing to offer but a cheesy sense of humour?

Hey, don’t run yourself down so. You’ve got plenty of things going for you, even if you can’t recognise it right at the moment. Including your looks, according to Mrs V.

Turnbull: I agree.

Ex-TC Debbie woke me up this morning with a huge dump of water through the window adjacent to the bed and onto my face. Not a little sprinkle but a dump. Like a jug of water. I hope the bed dries before tonight.

And the window was only open a little bit, at the top.

I’ll check the bucket at some stage and report the rainfall.

Heading back off the coast 6 am Friday. Current prediction has less wind predicted for Gold Coast / Brisbane / Byron than earlier predictions because Debbie moves further off the coast after crossing it.

Huge change from the first prediction I saw, which had Debbie petering out in western Queensland.

Current prediction has Debbie moving north after crossing the coast near Fraser Island, dying out near Cape Melville. With a bit of luck it will move west from there and hit eastern Qld again.

Windiest place at the moment (8:30 am) is Hay Point, which has a mean wind speed of 74 km/hr and gusts of 91 km/hr.

Debbie’s done now.

BoM are no longer tracking her.

She just wet me on the way to the train, so if you’re wondering where she is, she’s between Adelaide St and Central Station

Yes. Track’s shut down. Current position and predicted track can still be seen on WindyTV. Moving offshore Friday 7 AM through Brisbane now. (Instead of through Fraser Island).

And current wind and rain on Emerald 512 km radar loop. Perhaps elsewhere there’s a better track.

Um, you mean after crossing from land to sea?
WindyTV keeps changing its mind, but yes it still says that Debbie will head north after crossing the coast near Brisbane.

I haven’t seen a BOM prediction.

I haven’t seen a BOM prediction.

BOM prediction here has it heading back north during Saturday afternoon, Sunday and Monday before petering out.

I’ll just leave this here. It’s the BOM’s current prediction for next Wednesday: the low, they say, will be halfway to NZ, and another low will be making its way south-west over the north-west shelf.

DEBBIE DOES DOON DOON and the aptly named Gumboot.

Ex T C Debs is giving the Northern Rivers a hard time, particularly the Wilson, Tweed and Richmond rivers. The Wilson at Lismore is about to overtop their levees at 10.2m.. expected to go to around 11.5m. The flood will rival the big one of 74.

Around here tis wet as well with moderate flooding.

The earthworms are seeking higher ground and there is a python hanging onto a drying rack on the back verandah.

Some places in the Tweed recorded 24 hr rain totals of 500 to 750mm. Here 185.

There were storm force winds off the Byron coast earlier in the morning. Here, a moderate breeze.. in the dark the predominant sound was a from the creek racing along. We have waterfront views again.

! !

Lots of coastal flooding expected.

Rain from Debbie has all stopped now. It didn’t get as far inland as I had hoped. I expect that not much with reach Lake Eyre, but there will be a lot of water in the Darling River.

I think it briefly reached about 45 knots where I am, which is close enough to 90km/hr as matters…

The last time I was in 45 kts was in the middle of moreton bay pulling a couple of guys off of a sinking boat, so being rugged up in my own home was rather preferable :)
