Why cant Australia have a smart electricity grid?

use smart meters at home to auto set variable max usage

so rather than power going out, messages are sent to smart meters in homes to turns things off and turns things down

Mind you, given that it has become politically impossible to make meaningful progress on the future of Australia’s power supply or distribution, I think the change that your idea will get up is close to nil.

You’d think with advancing technology, power supply would rarely be a problem and everything recently manufactured is geared to use electricity smartly, seems we (Australia) at least is going backwards.

We’re working on it. For example, this one looks business-focused, but someone I know at AGL mentioned they have a consumer trial happening too.

The jargon you need to search for is “demand management”.

Is it something consumers actually want though? A lot of people will want their aircon on when it’s 40º – power prices for the rest of the year be damned.

If you have a smart meter installed, and most do, then the relevant Distribution Network Service Provider (DNSP) already has the facility to turn you off at any time. To work on a different scheme where individual loads within a property are turned off would require substantial investment by individual households, and I cannot see many people investing to have their AC turned off when the next door neighbour lives blissfully in their cool air because they couldn’t be buggered spending any money.

I would like to see heating and cooling systems regulating themselves with the load on the grid than losing power altogether.

So a drop in 3 degrees for say an hour during peak in that area would be better than the aircon off.

Don’t worry – they’re just updating the previous schemes they developed in 2008.

Did they just add some of this to the 2008 version?

I can hear it, the toaster sighing (Marvin style) and telling me it’s only going to lightly brown my toast this morning, and the kettle grumbling profanities suggesting I put less milk in my coffee because it’s going to not quite boil the water.

The question is this: Given that God is infinite, and that the universe is also infinite… would you like a toasted teacake?

Smart appliances connecting to smart meters connecting to a smart grid.

So rather than turning off a suburb the operator works out the amount of projected overload on the grid

then divides that amount across all smart heating or cooling systems across all suburbs so an entire suburb or suburbs would all be turned down by a degree or 2 at the same time through smart meters connecting to smart cooling and heating systems.

once all heating and cooling system have the feature a user would not experience a blackout, instead the aircon might go down by one degree and would not be noticeable to most people

one degree or 2 over an entire city would save quite an amount.
