There are two species of lyrebird: the Superb Lyrebird and the Good-enough-for-government-work Lyrebird. They are both endemic to the temperate zone of eastern Australia.

Some (((Einstein))) thought it would be a good idea to introduce them to Tasmania so there are a few there.

Lyrebirds are noted for their lovely plumage and also their ability to mimic sounds, both natural and anthropogenic.

They can fly a bit but it is not their core strength. Somewhat chickenlike in that regard.

The image of a lyrebird on the 10 cent piece was designed by Stuart Devlin. He was active in his field until quite recently, when he suffered a stroke at the age of 83.

Albert’s Lyrebird was named after Prince Albert, though usually it does not have one.

That would be good.

I believe they make Tas bush noises. Camera noises. Chainsaw and dirt bike noises. And some old hits of NSW scrub they have passed down.

Was watching a lyrebird courtship dance and song not too long ago at Fitzroy Falls.

I kept looking around for the female, no female in sight, then it dashed out towards me and I realised that it was dancing for me, in the hope that I’d like the dance enough to leave food for it.

This is superb! Thank you Mr DV for starting this thread.

I’ll have to add my own stories from Wentworth Falls and living with lyrebirds in the backyard. We lived right next to a gorge full of the little bastards. My eldest son tells the story of swimming with friends in Jellybean Pool, Glenbrook(?) Heaps of lyrebirds running around the cliff tops and rock ledges.
