Type of weapon? e.g. pistol, rifle, shotgun. Whether it was modified in any way e.g. sawn-off. Was it a real one, or a replica or homemade fake? Are the origins of the weapon known? e.g. legally owned by the perpetrator, stolen from another owner or another source, or an illegal import.

Or an un-surrendered weapon.
What about gender of perpetrator? I know that the majority of gun-related crime is carried out by males, but we need not be presumptuous about it.
And it will probably be decried as racial profiling/stereotyping, but what about perpetrator’s ethnic origin?

A proper scientific study includes all the variables.

Sensible people understand that, but there are some sections of the community that might find that some variables, and their reporting, don’t suit their political agendas – and they can be quite voluble about it.

There’s a lot of variables but from my experience when moving in lower class circles while on the run from the Old Bill it was racially specific.
Your average hombre from South America tended to use the biggest weapon they could get their hands on, shotguns and the like, the liked bravado, they liked noise and fury while your average jewel thief chap in London or New York liked something small, unobtrusive but effective if needed like a glock.

In Africa I used to carry a S&W .38 police special, 2” barrel. Wildly inaccurate bur deadly looking & loud
it’s good to know there’s a limit to the number of guns you can own it Australia..
last week that limit went down from 46 to 45… but there is a limit

The trouble is a lot of wealthy people own quite a few guns.
Makes it difficult for the young couple trying to buy their first gun.

boss just ordered the new Howa, but got a letter saying that’ll put him up to 47, so pick 2 to sell before we’ll let you import another one

is in SA, dunno about other states
I’ll expand the parameters of the mind map to include other variables and see where it goes.

but you can drive rusty cars in SA. Strange for the state that made so many new cars.

I’m still wondering how I can be charged with the crime of suicide or illegal gun possession if I am dead.

I’m putting suicide under gun use
use of a gun to end life

I thought suicide was no longer a crime.

I’d say you are right. And have been for many, many years.

But I agree it should be in any study on gun related deaths.

Yes, an entity can be charged with a crime, though the doings of an-entity-no-more that self-terminated can still be subject to the law. Punishment is difficult.

They used to charge unsuccessful attempts.
are you just investigating Australia or would you want to do an international meta analysis?
you can start with the AIC
http://www.aic.gov.au/statistics/homicide.html
http://www.aic.gov.au/dataTools/facts/weaponUseTrend.html
gun policy.org
http://www.gunpolicy.org/firearms/compareyears/10/total_number_of_gun_deaths
you really need to define the parameters before undertaking a study such as this
As said above, type of weapon is a big one in itself. Consider the options.
Different types of weapons go with different types of crimes.

- Saturday night special – cheapest illegal, disposable
- Shotgun – farmer’s weapon for killing game
- Military weapon – eg. Uzi, Kalashnikov
- Antique weapon -
- Sawn off shotgun -
- Handmade special -
- Bog standard pistol – eg. 9 mm handgun
- Expensive weapon, eg. specially intended for hiding.
- Police weapon -
- Toy pistol -
Different types of weapons go with different types of crimes.
Let’s try for some type of crimes associated with military-grade guns.
Some types of crime committed with homemade special or other highly-concealable gun
Some types of crime committed with antique weapons
Some types of crime committed by bog standard handgun (often a 9 mm). Nearly everything, but don’t forget these:

Thanks for the correction. Why did high school students get illegal weapons when they could have used legal ones?

Firearms
In the months prior to the attacks, Harris and Klebold acquired two 9 mm firearms and two 12-gauge shotguns. Their friend, Robyn Anderson, had inadvertently bought a rifle and the two shotguns used in the massacre at the Tanner Gun Show in December 1998. Through Philip Duran, another friend, Harris and Klebold later bought a handgun from Mark Manes for $500.
Using instructions obtained via the Internet, Harris and Klebold constructed a total of 99 improvised explosive devices of various designs and sizes. They sawed the barrels and butts off their shotguns to make them easier to conceal.
On the day of the massacre, Harris was equipped with a 12-gauge Savage-Springfield 67H pump-action shotgun (which he discharged a total of 25 times) and a Hi-Point 995 Carbine 9 mm carbine with thirteen 10-round magazines (which he fired a total of 96 times).
Klebold was equipped with a 9×19mm Intratec TEC-9 semi-automatic handgun with one 52-, one 32-, and one 28-round magazine and a 12-gauge Stevens 311D double-barreled sawed-off shotgun. Klebold primarily fired the TEC-9 handgun for a total of 55 times, while he discharged a total of 12 rounds from his double-barreled shotgun.
Facebook vows to ‘do better’ after man films himself committing murder

I’ve come across a police charge “Having Ready Access To Both Firearms And Illicit Drugs” on a few occasions which is different to possess unlicensed firearm/ammunition and I assume created as the combination of both isn’t really ideal and could end badly.
“Suicide by Cop”
