Scientists create negative mass fluid that flows against the force

If you push an ordinary ball, it moves away from your hand. No surprise there. But if you pushed a ball with negative mass, it would actually accelerate backwards, moving towards you instead.

Impossible, because if there were such a thing it would allow the existence of perpetual motion. I think.

Hmm, looking at this further, it has a connection to another impossibility, that of travelling faster than light. Travelling faster than light has been observed in quantum tunnelling, passing through a barrier that is classically impossible.

This new one, negative mass-energy, also appears while and only while quantum tunnelling through a barrier.

“To create this strange fluid, the team used lasers to cool rubidium atoms to a fraction above absolute zero, “

“It’s yet to be seen whether this escaping superfluid will be reliable and accurate enough to test out some of the very strange suggestions about negative mass in the lab, and before we get too excited, other teams need to replicate the results independently.”

I mean this not completely uninteresting but I wish they had not marketed it in this silly way.

Maybe they should call it imaginary negative mass.

No!

Imaginary mass is something quite different. Imaginary mass occurs all throughout quantum mechanics, negative mass does not.

I can conceive of negative mass but this ain’t it.

Oneshould flow with the force not against it, flowing against the force is the quickest path to the dark side.

Or, to put it another way. Flowing against the force is the quickest path to perpetual motion.

If force is defined as mass x acceleration, why would you change the sign of the mass in this case, rather than the sign of the force?

Hmm. That’s not such a stupid question.
