Satellites signal new low-cost space race

The launch of three Australian satellites may be one small step in the worldwide space industry but for local universities and start-ups looking to the stars, it’s a giant leap.

“We’re hoping this year we’ll have an announcement to form an Australian space agency,” Dr Parsons told AAP.

Wonder what they’ll call it. Not Australian Space Service (ASS) or Australian Regional Space Enterprises (ARSE).

There are still some people pushing for a spaceport in Australia’s top end. Possibly Northern Territory.

Well, we’ll look at what other countries call theirs.

Belarus Space Agency
Azerbaijan National Aerospace Agency
Bahrain’s National Space Science Agency
Thailand Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency
Iranian Space Agency
Korean Committee of Space Technology
Malaysian National Space Agency
Indonesian National Institute of Aeronautics and Space
Uzbek State Space Research Agency
Swiss Space Office
(Dubai) Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre

Even Luxembourg has it’s own space agency now. And recently NZ.

I humbly nominate myself at the first head of the Australian Space Boondoggle, being no less and possibly slightly more qualified for it than whatever superannuated politician they might have in mind right now.

I think i’d make an excellent candidate for all-expenses paid junkets to other nations’ space agencies (the Swiss, Thai, Canadian, French, Japanese, and US agencies spring readily to mind) where i’d make every effort to avoid embarrassing Australia at official functions by the simple strategy of not attending any of them.

In order to get my vote as the head of a space agency, you would need to correctly answer some serious questions. I have already asked these of the previous head of the Australian Space Agency, the agency shut down by Howard.

1. What is the minimum number of staff needed for a permanent Australian presence in space?

2. How would you gather together the initial committee that will decide the tasks and staff of the Australian Space Agency?
