If you are told you need blue light filter on your glasses (and it’s the current Big Thing for upselling), you should read this first:

Abstract

The introduction of low energy lighting and the widespread use of computer and mobile technologies have changed the exposure of human eyes to light. Occasional claims that the light sources with emissions containing blue light may cause eye damage raise concerns in the media. The aim of the study was to determine if it was appropriate to issue advice on the public health concerns. A number of sources were assessed and the exposure conditions were compared with international exposure limits, and the exposure likely to be received from staring at a blue sky. None of the sources assessed approached the exposure limits, even for extended viewing times.

From: Low-energy light bulbs, computers, tablets and the blue light hazard

The whole lot is interesting, but particularly the Discussion.

Thanks.

:)

I’ll try not to get up-sold on the next pair of spectacles I have to buy. (Fairly soon, as the current spectacles are getting quite scratched.

Thanks. There are some people who swear that UV blockers help reduce glare from reflections off water and snow. Blue is next to UV in the spectrum, so an ideal UV blocker will block blue to some extent.

As they say there, this research has nothing to do with mucking up circadian rhythm with blue light before bed. There is other research that does show that happens and it’s best to lay off the mobile phone etc for a couple of hours before bed. I guess the filters might be useful if you can’t/won’t turn off your screens so you get proper sleep.

My only complaint about color and light are web sites that have no night reading mode.

This trick is good for reading on a Galaxy S5, and other phones may support this feature

Negative colours Direct Access on Galaxy S5

On my S5 I can quickly access negative colours by triple-tapping my ‘home button’. You can setup this feature by turning-on “Direct Access, top right button” from your “Accessibility” menu and then checking the “Negative Colours” option.

Why would you want to use sunglasses with a computer screen?
