Subject: Values of the rare and exotic

For those interested in the increasing values of rare and exotic treasures should find the following of interest. It would seem cars and wine hold their value the most and provide the highest return on investment. Sorry, but I could not find anything about pianos apart from the art section that would cover a wide range of items, with probably paintings being the most volatile.

I wish to dispute those figures for cars. Most cars lose a lot of value, just taking them out of the showroom can knock 10 to 20% off the price.

So, which cars, coins etc. are they talking about?

Cars purchased as investments presumably.

Hmm, antique Porsche and Ferrari. That’s what they’re talking about.

Gold is the most volatile? Have they got that back to front?

I wonder how much gold you’d need to dump on the market to massively devalue it

they would have some models in that category but it is rarity that earns the money.

My guess is they are looking at the price of old objects now, and comparing with the same object 1, 5 and 10 years ago.

So whereas antique furniture was highly valued 10 years ago, and has actually gone down, antique cars have for some reason greatly increased in price.

It’s no guide at all for the next 10 years of course. If anything you could probably take it as an inverse guide.

Sounds awesome. But I guess if I had a kilo of it and sold it all at once the market price would collapse.

Has any ever been sold? What do you use it for?

Only if the market didn’t know you were hoarding it.

The world is divided into hafniums and hafnium-nots.

Actually you’re right. If you sold it all at once the price would drop markedly.

My learning for today, induced gamma emissions or something.

Wikipedia states

Hafnium reserves have been infamously estimated to last under 10 years by one source if the world population increases and demand grows. In reality, since hafnium occurs with zirconium, hafnium can always be a byproduct of zirconium extraction to the extent that the low demand requires.

From that link.

One gram of pure 178m2Hf contains approximately 1330 megajoules of energy, the equivalent in about 300 kilograms of TNT. So far the nuclear isomer exists only at low concentrations (<0.1%), within multi-isotopic hafnium. One gram of this material has about 1.33 megajoules of energy, about ten times better than compressed hydrogen.

Interesting stuff.
