Son recorded an interview for his business assignment on his samsung phone. It looks like it is now corrupted and he cant replay it on his phone. I got him to email it to me, it is about 5 mb. When I try to play it it says Item is unplayable, please reacquire the content. The extension of the file is m4a. Any suggestions?

yes – save the file as a copied file and then go into open with and then use the media programs and see if the file can be opened with your media programs

with the second copy of the file you could attempt to change the extension of the file as well and see what happens.

i find that i have to remove an x from some doc file for example when swapping from 10 to older systems to remove incapability issues from time to time.

make sure have two saved copies though t

He recorded it on the voice recorder on his galaxy 6, and I am trying to open it on my dell laptop – windows 10. It does’t seem to ask what I want to open it with,

Presumably that means you are using windows media player? A quick check suggests m4a might not be out of the box compatible with WMP. Need to get the codecs or find a compatible player…

Not sure what program this is using? It says go to edit in the menu – but what I am doing is opening the audio file from where it is saved in my folder…

And tried to open the file on my phone, and it came up with the error sorry, the player does not support this type of file….. even though it was automatically saved on a samsung as this type of file…

tried to convert it using the website Zamzar – but just got notification : There was a problem converting your file – We attempted to perform the conversion you requested from m4a to mp3 but unfortunately the conversion failed – our support team have been notified and are looking into the problem.

Damn! it is for an important assignment, and the poor kid is already sick.

You can get iTunes for windows and use that to convert it to mp3. I also avoid iTunes and have had success with VLC with files that refuse to play on anything else…

Okay – he tried to play it through itunes – didn’t work – came up with the same error I got – 0xc00d3635….bugger, back to the drawing board. I googled this error – and the fix looks complicated….

Doesn’t look like it is related to the type of file.

Might be worth a try. It’s the only quick tip I could find. Temporarily disable your antivirus and see if the file will open.

I have been playing with audio files a lot lately and the most versatile tool I’ve found is to add the file to a movie in the Windows Movie Maker app, from where you can do all sorts of tricks with it (lots of different formats to save it to, strips out the old security codes, and so on…)

After Movie Maker, any free M4a – MP3 converter will convert it.

From there, you will be able to open in the Audacity app, which has lots of good audio tools.

Hope that makes sense.

I’d be happy to have a crack at it, if you want to E-mail it to me.

It would be wonderful if you could try and fix it for him, if it isn’t too much trouble. His assignment is due fairly soon and I dont want him to stress out, as he was off 6 months last year with migraines. His teacher is pretty understanding though..

Where shall I send it? My email address is Brindabellas at the hot place.

Unless someone has uninstalled it or never installed. It will still be on your computer. You should simply have to find QuickTime and open your file with it.

Hey – this is my area of expertise. Bicarb and vanilla essence is good. Plus if it is still damp, use a moisture absorber/crystals

Hi Brindabella. I’m happy your son can get his assignment completed. And I’m happy I could finally help the forum instead of asking for help!

The issue, i think was in the M4a container. Samsung actually just make a .aac file and wrap it up as an .M4a.

I had planned to have Brindabella’s son make another file of same quality and use the wrapper header from that in the important file. But in the end, I just opened up the file in a hex editor and via trial and error found the dodgy part of the file which was the header, deleted it. The header contains info about the file type and the like. That was corrupted so no program knew what the file was and therefore couldn’t play it. I also deleted the first few seconds of the recording because the hex code looked corrupted.

Then removed the header and found I could easily convert the file into a .wav format without creating a new header. Then converted the .wav back into a .M4a file so the Samsung could read it properly again.

I learned somethign new along the way too.

Now, what was it about the chickens, Speedy? hehe.

I asked my son if he had told his business teacher that the file had got restored. He said he had – he said that ‘a friend’ had fixed it. So he didn’t admit that his mother’s online geeky friend got it fixed :-)
