Can someone tell me why some of the natives i planted 4 months ago havn’t grown at all yet some have grown over a foot. They haven’t died but haven’t grown, is there anything i can do with them to give them a kick along?

yes.. it is called H2O
lots of it.. soaked in deep.. make their roots go down.
however it won’t hurt to give them a bit of old manure as mulch or a handful of dynamic lifter watered in well under the mulch.roughbarked said:

I disagree with you rb, these trees have had as much H2O as the other, if not more , but i will give it another go and put some cow/horse poo around them

I have had instances where the trees side by side did better.. so I dug the weak one up with the intention of planting another only to find I had planted on top of a mallee root or an impermeable rock. I have also had trees blow over because they were planted where a vibrating roller had been road making. ;) http://www.flickr.com/photos/67449903@N00/3254686662/
may a soil test Rook ??

Good point, these trees have been planted on top of an old Dressage arena, i bet there are some hard rocks under them, i may lift them and get the crow bar out.

in the latter case what was happening was that the water was running away from the root zone .. caused by both a fatty soil and the compressed soild caused by roadmaking.
thus the tap roots went sideways towards the road.. and had no support for the tree. I’d try using a soil wetting agent and more mulch. I’d look for signs of disease in the poorly performing trees but generally.. because I always have plenty lying about.. I’ll just plant an leguminous species beside it .. namely Acacia or Senna.Rook said:

I am roughbarked .. at yahoo.co .nz
don’t be fooled by the nz .. yes my brother lives there.. but I live here.
an easy test for fatty soil is to put some in a container and pour water on it.. see if it beads up and just sits there or runs off.. without penetrating.

How do you overcome fatty soil?……dig in manures etc?

If the above is a problem for you.. then a wetting agent applied to the soil will help..
I used to do this.. poke the hose into the soil and use the water pressure to bore a hole deep enough to get water under the tree.

digging in manures will help yes.. a thick application of mulch will also.. Keep in mind that the only soils I have worked with are all fatty.. and also most are salty or calcerous.
so.. I have much experience in this field. especially pertaining to establishing natives

;) thanks .. yes you can pour dynamic lifter or another equally slow releasing low toxicity to natives fertiliser.

oops .. down the hole.. ;) I meant..
Don’t use the water crystals .. they will dry out and create an airspace .. which is detrimental to your purpose.
I have often planted a Eucalypt and a Senna or Acacia.. in the same hole. Surprising how well it works.
.. and
sorry to start with an and.. but these posts are uneditable.. um what was I going to say?um yes..
I have killed several mattocks by splitting the blade and rolling back half of the blade like a sardine can.. I have bent the blades round and I cannot count the amount of handles I have splintered. However despite the intricacies of the ground you are planting on.. The mattock remains the best tool for opening it up for tree planting.. other than a plug of nitropel.I wish again Rook LOL
Soil tests can help.. but visible signs in the trees are usually enough to tell one .. what is wrong.
chlorosis for example.. is common on alkaline soils. in my case I solved most of such problems with an 40 cm mulch layer of hot.. yes “hot” grape marc.
