Chinese scientists use satellite to smash quantum entanglement distance record

The feat, published today in the journal Science, is more than 10 times the distance previously achieved using land-based fibre optic technologies.

The experiment by a group of Chinese researchers, led by Professor Jian-Wei Pan of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), takes us a step closer to achieving instant, unhackable communication.

Presumably, they’ve taken an oath to use their powers for good, and not evil.

See what one country can achieve when not wasting Billion$ on climate change & wasting so much energy, bitching about, & trying to impeach an elected President.

…and when you’re able to operate an economy based on total disregard for environmental damage, human suffering, or safety standards for production processes or for workers, end products and their users, while simultaneously perpetuating a political system which ruthlessly stifles comment, let alone dissent, and which confers enormous advantage and protection to a select elite.

When will the light of such a day dawn in this nation?

I do wonder if he’s even heard the word ‘accountability’.

It doesn’t seem to be mapped into the projections.

Jiang Zemin; now there’s a blast form the past. There’s a whole new cadre of party stooges these days.

In principle, distance per se is not a constraint on quantum entanglement. The real constraint is that if either of the entangled particles interacts with anything, then the entanglement between them will be destroyed. In practice, this will impose constrains on distance as well as time.

From the same report:

“Here in Australia, the work on a quantum satellite led by Professor Xiong in collaboration with the European Space Agency, could see Australia have similar or even better quantum science capacity as soon as 2021.”

And that without all of the ‘advantages’ the China possesses.

It’s been done to satellite before.

But if I remember correctly, it was shorter than the land based record, which was along the Great Wall of China.

Instant communication? Entanglement itself doesn’t communicate any information. Thus, while entanglement has no speed limit, special relativity is not violated as there is no information travelling faster than c.

The communication may be “unhackable” to a man-in-the-middle attack, but it seems to me that such a communication would be vulnerable to a denial-of-service attack by a man-in-the-middle.

In other news, a photonic signal has just been sent over a 186 km long aerial optic fibre link.

New distance record.
