Brilliant. It would have been a good topic for a cartoon if I had discovered it. I get some of it:

1. Approximate the 3-D shape as a polyhedron.
2. Manually select where you want to edge of that polyhedron to be.
3. Expand out a development of that polyhedron on a flat sheet of paper.
4. Draw a Voronoi diagram on that.
5. Fold.

The higher the number on that list, the less I understand about how the process works.
