Subject: Art in Australia

Not a question about Australian artists. I’m currently reading “the monuments men”, about how prior to D-Day a list of more than 1000 places in Europe highlighted where the greatest works of art could be found. Particularly in major museums, major churches, but also in villas and offices.

Australia doesn’t have any art remotely equivalent to that – or does it?

Blue Poles by Pollak is the most expensive artwork in Australia at an estimated $230 million. No painting by an Australian artist has ever sold for more than $5.4 million.

There are non-portable pieces of art – architecture.

I’m wondering about civic sculpture – these may be the most valuable portable artworks in Australia?

There would be private collections I assume. But where? I know one private collector with a 4,000 year old bronze statue.

And semi-public art in foyers, pubs (eg. Chloe), corridors and meeting rooms.

And church art.

So, if you were listing the locations of most valuable portable artworks in Australia, where would you choose?
Who in Australia is a fine art collector?

Jewelry counts as fine art.

The invigilators move around the museum during their shifts. They get some sitting and some standing and some walking. To their credit they work hard at not RSIing their staff,

At a guess I’d suspect the NGV would be our closest. It has a fairly decent collection.
