Startling claims by the Greens that cruise ships docked in Sydney cause cancer & heart disease have been dismissed as “scare mongering” by the state government after a new study showed the vessels don’t breach air pollution rules.

Balmain Greens State MP Jamie Barker,,,I mean Parker, led a campaign against the $3 billion industry, claiming ships belched out pollutants that “put the local community at risk of health problems including asthma & heart disease”.

His claims are bullshit,,, I mean incorrect, after a Port Authority study showed air quality did not exceed criteria set by the EPA since monitoring started in 2013, when the terminal was built.

The Port Authority reported that Balamin had better air quality than many other areas in Sydney.

Data collected at the terminal shows since September 2015 there were just two days where sulphur dioxide rose above permitted levels. Vessels were not present on either day.

Ports Minister Malinda Pavey branded the Greens “nuts”. Quote; “This is typical scare mongering by the Greens who ignore the evidence even when it’s right under their noses.”.

So I went searching for some of the stuff I’d previously read, only to find that well known greenie, Alan Jones, has also been a campaigner about cruise ships docking in Sydney.

And any party wanting to establish a Federal ICAC has got my vote. Not seeing too many of the major parties or the lone wolf ones calling for it….

Given the marginalisation of the Left Renewal faction within the Greens, and the ostracization of Senator Rhiannon, you have to wonder whether there is any place for left-wing politics within the modern Greens party. They might end up missing the boat if their only goal is to weild influence over the Coalition.

To measure local ambient air quality in the vicinity of White Bay Cruise Terminal, a monitoring station was installed in September 2015 in the streets just above the White Bay terminal in Balmain. The monitoring station records both ambient air quality and weather data to give a clear and accurate picture of the air quality close to White Bay Cruise Terminal.

The data is analysed and an interpretive report is prepared each month and posted, providing useful information not only for the Port Authority and our consultants but also for any others who wish to be informed about the ambient air quality in Balmain.

Results of monthly air quality monitoring for September and October 2015 show significantly lower sulfur dioxide (SO2) levels following the commencement of use of low-sulfur fuel by cruise ships whilst at berth in Sydney Harbour, on 1 October 2015.

Looks like the port authority didn’t have monitoring close to the source for 2 years. And that they put it in place only after the low sulphur fuel was put into use.

The commencement of the low sulphur fuel was greatly resisted by the cruise ship companies, as it came at a greater cost to them, at the expense of the health of the residents. Other countries have laws about using low sulphur fuel close to ports, so I’m glad it was taken up here too.
So, the real motive of this particular environmental activist work- better health. Scary stuff.

The Port Authority has recommended the state government scrap considerstion of installing electric power at White Bay, a proposal that would have avoided ships burning fuel while berthed. This had been claimed as a major source of polution.

Last year the industry voluntarily agreed to burn low-sulpher fuel while berthed, something cruise ship company Carnival Australia said “had a significant impact on emissions”.
