Hey poindexter (which in this context I suppose means Bubblecar)…
Are there any good double bass concerto with a full (or sizable) orchestral accompaniment?

I enjoy the double bass, features in the old blues a lot, like willie dixon

Try again:
I’m no double bass expert, but you’ll find that most of the concertos are by relatively minor composers (in the classical period, usually DB virtuosi who composed for their instrument since the “big names” weren’t all that interested).
20th century composers got more involved but again the works tend to be quite obscure. This 1980 one by Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara is quite evocative and makes wide use of the DB’s resources:
(3rd movement) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13muj25Smvk
Wikipedia gives a list of DB concertos and you can find a number of them on Choob and see what’s to your taste:

Since the question is so well answered, may I offer a double bass concerto with a very small orchestra (a single piano to be precise):
Seems to be all about the bass.

no trouble..
This one sounding good too
Double Bass Concerto No. 2 in B minor – G. Bottesini (1821-1889) – SCM Chamber Orchestra
Oh God I want to see Eva Green in a French Pirate Movie !
The Lioness Of Brittany Jeanne de Clisson, based on a real French Pirate Story
Eva has a distinctive voice which would go well in a pirate drunk scene or a pirate rousing scene, scary scene, sensual scene, any scene.
I see female pirates.
Lots of them.
Jennifer Lawrence in a pirate movie?
Dunno about this one, I prefer the earlier composers

I was going to mention this Tubin concerto which is very expressive and quite highly regarded. These 20th century works (that one’s from 1948) make much wider use of the instrument’s capabilities than the earlier works.
Another modern one. UT Symphony Orchestra.
Doo Woong Chung – Nino Rota, Divertimento Concertante for Double Bass and Orchestra
I don’t venture into modern classical very often.
Contra and electric bass players learn a lot of Cello music in training, which is a lot more interesting (than CB) but doesn’t always transfer across cleanly because the Cello is tuned in fifths, CB in fourths.

I have a romantic story about the acquisition of a double bass. It features nuns, a nunnery, an ancient man in the musical instrument shop, a 1950s Kombi and my obsessed former partner.

Interesting that that link has only just over 100,000 hits.
Too long for kids these days I suppose.
But what it has to do with the Double Bass, I don’t know.

Very little other than that I can imagine it being played on a double bass.
