I wonder what the average reduction in sex hormone scent between genders is reduced by clothing?
If there is any reduction is a cause of a general falling male sperm count?

Not everyone is convinced:
Many previous studies have indicated similar sharp declines in sperm count in developed economies, but sceptics say that a large proportion of them have been flawed.
Some have investigated a relatively small number of men, or included only men who attend fertility clinics and are, in any case, more likely to have low sperm counts.
There is also concern that studies that claim to show a decline in sperm counts are more likely to get published in scientific journals than those that do not.
Another difficulty is that early methods of counting sperm may have overestimated the true count.
Taken together these factors may have created a false view of falling sperm counts.
But the researchers claim to have accounted for some of these deficiencies, leaving some doubters, such as Prof Allan Pacey of Sheffield University, less sceptical.
He said: “I’ve never been particularly convinced by the many studies published so far claiming that human sperm counts have declined in the recent past.”
“However, the study today by Dr Levine and his colleagues deals head-on with many of the deficiencies of previous studies.”
But Prof Pacey believes that although the new study has reduced the possibility of errors it does not entirely remove them. So, he says, the results should be treated with caution.
“The debate has not yet been resolved and there is clearly much work still to be done.
“However, the paper does represent a step forward in the clarity of the data which might ultimately allow us to define better studies to examine this issue.”

Live at the Apollo a comedian did a bit on how pornography is changing sexual habits. A couple went to see a doctor because they were unable to have children, after tests they were both found to be fertile so the doctor asked them how they did it. In the normal way the bloke said, pound away then come on her tits.

Clothing covers up the testicles which cannot dissipate heat like they can without clothes, so heat builds up more in the testicles, thus causing lower quality sperm.
A 60 pc decrease over 40 years is a bit alarming.
A design change in mens clothing could improve things
That’s if clothing is the cause.

he article you quoted also discussed the increase in assisted reproduction… This technology is getting better (although very slowly) but I’d suggest that low sperm count isn’t really going to affect reproduction in the long term… if this article is complete factual and accurately presents the results (and I’d guess it’s not) this is likely just a trend that will move upwards again over the next fifty years… or everyone will die from upsizing their maccas

With the consistent reduction of the Y chromosome, it is estimated that all male humans will eventually become infertile in a few thousand years (if we last that long).
That’s a long time in which to try turning it off then turning it on again.

The Y chromosome in quite small and very fragile in comparison to the X chromosome and it is apparently losing bits along the way, thereby making it even smaller.

Extra clothing could be heating up the testicles, and that’s what could be reducing sperm count.
Because of global cooling?
Clothing covers up the testicles which cannot dissipate heat like they can without clothes, so heat builds up more in the testicles, thus causing lower quality sperm.
A 60 pc decrease over 40 years is a bit alarming.
A design change in mens clothing could improve things
That’s if clothing is the cause.
Otherwise, dunno. Back to scratching head.
But if we plotted the trouser tightness index for young men over the last 50 years, surely it would fall rapidly for the first ten years, then be pretty well constant.
(assuming peak-trouser tightness was in 1967, which seems like a reasonable guess to me)

The headmaster of my boys’ school may have had the answer to this.
In our sex education classes (which were remarkably free of any mention of sex between humans) he told us not to masturbate because we needed to preserve our supply of sperm for when we wanted to have kids.
Maybe the old guy had it right!

How does that work?
do the testicles reach full, then production gets turned off
or do the testicles just keep on producing sperm regards?

Sure, but we are talking about a particular sub-set of a particular species, where masturbation was strenuously discouraged for a long period of time, and where the relaxation of the discouragement is coincident with a change in measured sperm levels (maybe).

Surely it’s a possibility.
mastrubation could account for sperm falling but still have nothing to do with sperm counts falling.

Surely it’s a possibility.
As monkeys, apes & dolphins masturbate it seems to be part of nature.
Sure, but we are talking about a particular sub-set of a particular species, where masturbation was strenuously discouraged for a long period of time, and where the relaxation of the discouragement is coincident with a change in measured sperm levels (maybe).
It may be coincidence, but maybe it isn’t.
It has nothing to do with it. It is largely about a shit diet and bad genetics passed down.

I’m surprised young people can raise the energy to wank.

I doubt that discouragement of masturbation had much effect on the average incidence of masturbation.

You can’t possibly know that.
And the “bad genetics” is very unlikely. Not enough time for a big effect.

I think it probably did.
Why wouldn’t it?

Cardinal Pell did say, “give me a child until he is seven and you will never change him”. Which is absolute crap. The catholic church actually turned me against them.

Look at this way – men who ejaculate during frequent sexual intercourse with a female partner have the best chance of becoming fathers.
It shouldn’t make any difference to the sperm count whether frequent ejaculation occurs in that context or via masturbation.
> Does frequent masturbation affect male fertility?
Frequent male masturbation isn’t likely to have much effect on your ability to get your partner pregnant.
Some data shows that optimum semen quality occurs after two to three days of no ejaculation. But other research suggests that men who have normal sperm quality maintain normal sperm motility and concentrations even with daily ejaculation.
Ultimately, having sexual intercourse with ejaculation several times a week will maximize your chances of getting your partner pregnant, whether you masturbate or not.

The analysis did not explore reasons for the decline, but researchers said falling sperm counts have previously been linked to various factors such as exposure to certain chemicals and pesticides, smoking, stress and obesity.

I agree that’s absolute crap (even though it was said by someone much earlier than Pell), but that doesn’t mean that religious preachings have no effect on how young people behave, even in private.
There must be some statistics on this (although how reliable they are would of course be debatable).
We could have a mass debate about it if someone can come up with the numbers.

Well that’s mixing up “sperm count” with probability of getting a woman pregnant.
And it says that there is some data suggesting that frequent ejaculation reduces sperm count, then dismisses it without giving any reason.
So highly inconclusive.

“two to three days of no ejaculation” suggests that masturbation is completely irrelevant.
And before the advent of puritanical religion, there were presumably no strictures against masturbation, but the species certainly survived such unbridled licentiousness.

What does that have to do with the discussion?
Did someone suggest that unbridled licentiousness might lead to the demise of the species?
The question is purely about a possible drop in sperm count in recent years, which may or may not have any connection with probability of starting a pregnancy.
I mean it’s quite possible that fewer but fresher sperm are the ideal thing for starting off a healthy baby.
