Hurricane scientists say they’ve “never seen anything like this in the modern record”.
Satellite images show three hurricanes currently lined up in the Atlantic Ocean threatening to make landfall.
The US National Hurricane Centre (NHC) has issued advisories on Hurricane Irma, Hurricane Jose, and Hurricane Katia, all of which have the potential to hit land at the same time.
This is something Eric Blake, an NHC scientist, said is “unparalleled here and totally ridiculous given Irma”.
Hurricane Irma, dubbed one of the most powerful Atlantic storms in a century, has already ploughed past the Dominican Republic and devastated a string of Caribbean islands, killing at least 14 people.
The NHC said Irma would continue to bring life-threatening wind, storm surge and rainfall hazards to the to the northern coast of Haiti through Saturday.
The category five hurricane is expected to make landfall in southern Florida on Sunday, bringing devastating 290kph winds, before it eases back to a category four.

“Cuban officials said this morning that one million residents had been evacuated ahead of the storm,” Galiano said.

I learned about it from a doco years ago. It’s an amazing system. I particularly remember seeing people evacuating their tvs prior to the storm. Not because they feared looting, but because it was going to be a useful thing to have later. And I seem to recall that the general organization includes doctors assigned to particular groups of citizens, and they evacuate with their group so they are there if needed.

One of my little jobs today was to scrape out and restore the manky and algae full bird bowl. It is a big one, one of those designed as a fountain, I just turned it upside down and blocked the hole. Ordinary bird baths evaporate in a day here in high summer. It gets manky because the cores insist on washing food in it, plus leaves fall in.
I haven’t bothered with it because it has been wet and plenty of puddles about but the weather is warming up and the puddles gone a few days ago and it was pretty stinky.
After a scour and filling it with fresh water within 15 minutes sparrows and eastern spine bills were having a wash.
