Continental’s latest concept tire adjusts tread to meet the conditions
It’s remarkable but true that most of the cars in any given carpark have incorrectly inflated or damaged tires. Humans are apparently smart enough to earn a spare $20,000+ to buy a car, but not clever enough to monitor the functionality of one of the most important parts of that car – the tires. Hence, Continental’s new concept tire makes a lot of sense as it monitors and reports on its health and can tailor its characteristics to prevailing road conditions.

We have technology that can scan the stars in the skies for change.
If something of a different color (and shape) to the grass moves it becomes easily detectable.

Sure, its early days in this field, self driving cars and technology making decisions, the technology making those decisions is still based on algorithms that are created by available information, and where more information leads to better algorithms .
Sonar and radar send waves out which then bounce back. and yes these are used on self driving cars but they take timing and speed into account and such.
But light information is one way coming in, light coming into ones eye and light coming into a camera, same thing, so processing it via a spectrograph is way faster than other methods.
I see a strong industry evolving in environment / perception detection covering many overlapping fields.

Eyes for drones, cars, robots, blind people, anything plus the visual processing system and storing systems that goes with it.

They have algorithms worked out for deer, elk and caribou and I would think also for cats and dogs cattle sheep etc
But roos move in a different way but that’s not an unsolvable problem.
A detailed systems analyse would provide a usable algorithm, just one with more curve projections etc

You can solve the problem with kangaroos easily. Put out one of their eyes.
Otherwise they are virtually unpredictable within the nanoseconds computers need to decide to act in.

Far and away, make noise. The kangaroo will hear you and make decisions. Drive with infrared light at night. Kangaroos will not jump into your headlights if you turn them off. You are far more likley to hit an Aberdeen Angus though.

Yes they do move in certain ways, but all animals have that unpredictability, which the algorithms take into account on the fly.

Well they aren’t behind the wheels of cars on the roads with me.
When it is cold enough with fog dense enough to see no more than the one white line strip at a time, why are people overtaking you at 120+?
By retarding governer sensing cold temperatures, if the temperature coming off the road ahead is cold enough, your car simply slows down and it works against any attempts you make to speed up.

If you had ever done any off road racing or rally driving, you’d realise that is what the navigator is for.
No talking, hand signals only.
never heard of pace notes?
also just think, you’re driving down a dirt track at 200kph and you are watching your navigators hands? yeah sure. that’s why they have an intercom so the nav can read the pace notes to the driver.

Tyres are overdesigned to hell. They are designed for motor racing speeds, not for Aussie road speeds. As a result, incorrect inflation and minor damage is no more of a concern than flaws in a house brick or a four by two.
The real problem is impact with a kerb at speed or driving over a broken glass bottle.

She didn’t do many miles then. HK Holdens came with rag cross-ply tyres. You’d get around 5-6,000 miles out of them driving gently. I’m not sure rag tyres had speed ratings in 1968.
These had 125 mph speed rating on the side. Anyway, they did what they did.
I recently had a car that had cheap tyres that came with the car as the spare tyre had never been used. All this since 2003. I drove on them for three years and only had just put on new tyres before it drove straight as a die for about 60 to 70 metres off road through what should otherwise have been obstacles at a starting speed of 70 kmph.

I fear the new smart tyres would do little good here in Qld. I regularly see very expensive German 4×4 s parked in the street with bald tyres.
The bloke who bought mum’s Kingswood for more than she paid for it, drove it directly to Darwin and complained that he had to replace both left side tyres.

humour i presume.
I remember my mother’s Kingswood 186S model. The first Kingswood, HK was it? the tyres were rated at 125 mph. They were still on it when she sold it twenty odd years later.

they cracked and started to peel within 10 years too, you’ll never find any complete because the rubber perished, no matter how little or far they’d travelled
Surprisingly, these did none of that. They only failed on the road to Darwin and only the tyres that continually hit the edge of the road.

Self-driving cars will be safer drivers than I am, but I’m still nervous in them
The first time I activated Autopilot in a Tesla, I cringed.
I lifted my hands off the steering wheel slowly, keeping them an inch away, ready to grab it at any moment. I did the same with my right foot, hovering close to the brake pedal.
I may have been behind the wheel, but the Model S was doing all the driving.
As we cruised down a highway near Red Hook, Brooklyn, I asked the Tesla staffer sitting in the passenger seat if the car could see what I was seeing.

Puny Humans Still See the World Better Than Self-Driving Car
A confidence booster for you, puny human: The machines don’t have you beat. Yet.
Yes, the autonomous car is coming, and fast. Tesla delivered the first of its much-anticipated Model 3s last week, complete with the Autopilot feature that allows the cars to drive themselves on well-marked highways. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class can conquer a roundabout on its own.

The Big Problem With Self-Driving Cars Is People
Reading Body Language: A purely interpretive problem that self-driving cars cannot yet solve is that of making sense of the way people hold themselves and move. For instance, a self-driving car could not tell what any human driver could take in at a glance: The couple conversing animatedly near the curb are not about to wander into traffic. If, however, one person turns away from the other and in the direction of the street, it means she’s about to cross .

I rented a car overseas a while ago that had a bleeping warning when you exceeded 130km/h. We had a competition to see who could keep the bleep on longest :)

Fark that reminded me. A lady I know bought her byfriend a secondhand BMW top of the ine job. They were out test driving it when she said what does this button do? and was answered by 000 “what are your coordinates?”
oh shit sorry, it was an accident.
“That’s why we need to know where you are”.
Oh shit sorry I accidentally pushed the button.

Sounds like a PK Dick book that I read. If the car went without regular servicing it not only ran poorly its attitude became worse.
