Researchers develop spectroscopic ‘science camera’ system for smartphones

The latest versions of most smartphones contain at least two and sometimes three built-in cameras. Researchers at the University of Illinois would like to sell mobile device manufactures on the idea of adding yet another image sensor as a built-in capability for health diagnostic, environmental monitoring, and general-purpose color sensing applications.

Could a spectroscopic-science-camera detect ice on the road?

Say shine a beam of light at different angles in front and under the car.

Then a spectroscopic camera reads the light.

Could ice on the road be detected?

Smart phones are turning into whole of life applications and personal computers on a scale barely imagined not that long ago. I expect soon they will be imbedded under the skin so you can’t leave home without it which has its own host of implications.

But my simple question is, do the kids of today have wallets or purses at all now, or is it all the smart phone…with maybe a few slots in a carry case for cards.

And my VBT is going to fill again. Tau you really need to take an extra second in your enthusiasm and edit your titles. It’s a PITA.

Card-less systems are out there

I’d imagine cars will get it too for toll gates and wifi enabled parking meters

Yes I get that, but people still need licenses and Medicare cards at a minimum.

If you could put in a chip in your index finger for all card information would you do it?

Small chip that other devices can read.

save carrying around a wallet

but say the chip had your finger print and your DNA information in it as well as card info so as to tie your cards to you so no one else could use it

and be editable by only you with finger print, dna and password security

I would

I do like the idea of being able to put everything on a device and go.. but I worry about a. loss or theft and b. battery power.

I have a very small wallet that carries money, license, 1 ATM card and medicare card. if I lose/gets stolen then I still have credit cards at home to use in the interim and not much to have to replace. I have friends who have a large bulky purse that carries every loyalty card from every store they have ever visited and all their credit cards etc…

they would be clean chips

inserted by yourself

by a chip injector machine

hard to loose if there under skin

they would be passive devices (no Battery)

You can. I prefer not to. In parallel with those developments will also be the developments of monitoring and societal statistical analysis .

I have read too many dystopian futures which include embedded chips.

Not only that, waaaaay too many negative implications on multiple mundane fronts. You meant ironed before health monitoring, how about insurance companies monitoring blood alcohol levels etc.

a chip gets rid of that

Sitting at home you are having a beer and you get a warning via your earbud that you are about to exceed governmental health guidelines and that your car is about to be disabled and you now have lowest priority in emergency services due to voluntary self impairment.

All this gear, when tied together allows this sort of stuff to happen.

putting all of your information in one spot is fraught with terribleness… this is wxactly why banks need more than one point of ID.. and usually something that is not found in a wallet

you can get passive e-chips

basically the chip is battery free and the reader supplies the rf energy to read the chip

you can read more here
