In the three-and-a-half years since astronaut Andrew Thomas publicly urged Australia to play a leading role in space tourism, the idea has struggled to get off the ground.

Despite prominent calls to develop our own space agency, including from Dr Thomas himself, a federal review into that proposal is not expected to be ready for another six months.

Excellent. I once met the head of the Australian Space Agency that was both formed by and killed by John Howard. The agency that launched Fedsat.

We had a brief talk about how many people would be needed to give Australia a permanent robotic presence in space. The first step is to get the scientists agreeing on exactly what they want from an Australian Space Agency, rather than first lobbying for Government funding. The lobbying comes second.
