Documentary captures young drivers using phones, taking selfies behind the wheel

Older drivers are just as bad

Ive seen drivers waving into other lanes while using phones.

These drivers are dangerous

If their attention is not on the road and their attention is diverted to another space for x amount of time then there is a risk of an accident

Road traffic authority need to look at this issue a bit more to determine what amount of time drivers have their attention diverted to a smart phone

What was the average time the drivers had diverted their attention on smartphones instead of the road

Then there is the whole picture

so they divert their attention to picking up the phone
then refocus their eyes to a shorter distance to look at information on a screen
they become unaware of the road while their attention is on the smartphone screen
they spend time interacting with the device
then they put down the phone
then refocus their eyes back to the road

Their road awareness become diminished.

Not good driving.

There are lots of ways that drivers can be bad drivers. I had two near misses today, and a mobile phone wasn’t involved.

I have trouble understanding why people need to answer the phone while driving.

Methinks that statement requires a new thread.

I’ve been curious about this sort of thing. If someone is driving along and talking on the phone, then the police pull them over and the driver says “I wasn’t talking on the phone”, why don’t the police take the phone and look at the call log?

They can and that has been used in court on various occasions.

Holding the phone while driving is enough to fine you. Whether you were talking or not is irrelevent.

You’re allowed to talk on the phone while driving with a hands-free system so the call log alone may not resolve this matter.

I have an idea

Maybe driving instructors should start monitoring drivers under training for phone distraction while driving?

This is where the individuals reaction to a distraction is assessed as competent or still needing improvement.

This would mean that the drivers phones are rung while under driver testing and the instructor sees how they deal with the phone while driving.

Something like that.
