Hadn’t noticed it up to now. “Vowel mutation” has tended to occur a lot in the history of English and English/Germanic languages. Here’s the IPA chart for vowels.

I tend to say Melbǝrn and Canbǝrra.
Not Mel born, Mel bin, Can berra, or Can bra

Just my opinion.

The correct pronunciation of Melbourne is ˈmɛlbərn.

The correct pronunciation of Canberra is ˈkænbrə or ˈkænbərə. I prefer ˈkænbərə.

If you want to be funny, the pronunciations are Mel-bum and Canned-bra.
