I have planted out my sprouting garlic, hope some of it’s that lovely Mexican red garlic…

Just in planters for the time being, to see how they go and also because I haven’t had time to set up starter pots…if hot weather comes again I can move the pots to a cooler spot until about May or so, when it suddenly gets a lot cooler during the day…

Apart from weekly applications of diluted worm wee, any tips?

No water, lots of water, when to water?????

as long as they are well drained give them regular water. you just don’t want them sitting in very wet soil or they may rot.

more water = bigger knobs of garlic but yes they need well drained conditions. I allow it to stay in the ground until I need it and only dig it in wet years so I end up with garlic all over the place. Gar;ic purchased from the grocer has usually been treated to stop it sprouting. Which usually means that it won’t grow.

but what if it’s been purchased from the grocer and is sprouting with determination?

Yep many grocers buy their garlic locally. Many may even grow it themselves in rural areas. I really was referring more to the supermarket type grocer.

If the garlic grows.. it grows. If it doesn’t … it does not.

Got a feeling in my bones…I’m going to be luckier with garlic than I ever will be with potatoes…this is my fifth year of trying garlic and I think, by George! I might have the hang of it by now!

i thought i was looking at a soup bowl – then i saw the person behind it.
that is enormous garlic – you would have to cut it up before putting it in the garlic crusher.

It would clear your sinuses in the process!

this sort of garlic is said to be milder than the smaller varieties, but that is an impressive yield!

You’d never guess that it would be milder in flavour and smell…but sometimes all you need in a dish is a whiff of garlic…

I grow the “Russian” garlic.. have done for decades. It is actually more leek than garlic. Though it is milder, it isn’t as sweet as garlic.

Hehe yep just spotted it. It’s hard trying to catch up on all the things you miss when you can’t get on for a while. And sometimes it’s too time consuming to catch up.

I’ll have me a good read and then decide if I will pop the cloves out.

Just going to put the kettle on.

The ones I have planted out (into a water well planter) are doing very well. Two died from thirst but the rest are thriving. I have mulched them with broken up egg cartons and water with last night’s kettle water (rain water) every morning…

I keep checking those left in the fridge for more shoots, but no luck so far…
