I heard an astounding piece on ABC Classic FM today, a sonata for bassoon and strings. I’ve never heard the bassoon played like that before, so I thought it must be a fairly modern piece but it was Sonata No. 2 by Giovanni Antonio Bertoli. Seemed like a piece that would be exhausting to play.

Prima vs seconda.

Is this the one (sic) you’re on about?

Sadly, no. :-/ I might never hear it again.

Unless I buy it. Doesn’t seem to be available for download but there is a version on CD.

So you’ve managed to find a piece of music that isn’t stored anywhere on the internet.

That’s actually quite a feat.

Not familiar with this piece and I don’t have it.

The Classic FM music listing should tell you the source of the version they played.

Bertoli, Giovanni Antonio
Sonata Seconda
Ensemble Aurora
Mille Consigli: 17th-Century Italian Violin Sonatas (Glossa GCD 921208)

Odd that they should call it a violin sonata. Sure, there were violins, but the bassoon was front and centre.

Seems Giovanni Antonio Bertoli doesn’t even deserve a Wikipedia page though he does get a mention on the Bertoli disambig page.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bertoli

I suppose I should commend the ABC Classics team for unearthing these forgotten gems.

That’s the only one I could find but I assumed you were referring to a bassoon sonata.

That would appear to be it. Cheers.

Seems it’s not a bassoon, but a similar instrument called a dulcian.

Predecessor of the bassoon, usually known as the curtal in English.

“The dulcian is a flexible instrument, capable of being loud enough to play in outdoor bands, quiet enough for chamber music, and expressive enough to join in with the choir. Its uses would have included playing dance music with the shawms and sackbuts of the city watch”

I see. Don’t see many shawms and sackbuts around now.

I can’t believe PWM isn’t all over this thread with shawms and sackbuts being mentioned

Shawms are conical bore double-reed instruments (similar to the oboe but much simpler), sackbut was the old name for trombone.

Curtal + shawms and other noisy squeakers & bangers playing in consort.
