Subject: Garden Makeover Birthday Party
OK, this year in July I turn 50. Now some people seem to think this is a significant age and that you should have a special event for it. And some of you may think that maybe I’ve got some wonderful garden seeing as I hang around you lot and talk garden talk. But the fact of the matter my garden is probably the worst in Melbourne! It has been said that age is all in the mind, but someone forgot to tell my body that. So my garden is weed ridden and scrappy looking and what with low energy levels, having to work, broken wrist no rain and heatwaves I have not been able to do much about it.
So this is the plan. For my birthday I would like to invite you to come and help me makeover my garden! For your efforts you will get fed and “watered” with drinks of your choice in abundance. No gifts, just your company, expertise, gardening tools and a willingness to put in a bit of work. There will be jobs from simple weeding (if the ground is soft enough by then) to wielding the chainsaw to bring down the dead apricot tree. Plants propagated from your garden would be gratefully accepted too.
This would be a wonderful present for me, to see my garden as I have dreamed it to be and not as it actually is, and to have you all come and share in the process of making it so. So mark in your diaries that the 25th of July is booked for for bluegreen’s Garden Makeover Birthday Party! Please do say you can come!

BG that’s such an excellent idea!! As another gardener (aspiring, in my case) with a garden in a deplorable state, I know it can be really quite hard to ask for help – especially when you know exactly what you want to do, but just find it difficult to manage!
I wish I could come and help in your garden :( Maybe I could send some seeds??

Thee, I’m counting on you come rain, hail or shine! I know it is the middle of winter, that is the only drawback. But at least it won’t be hot! And yes, some prep work will need to be done before the date. We have a trailer and the ute to pull it. I am also thinking about one of your bins????
Family and other friends (some from Sydney) are also being invited so could make for an interesting day. The key thing is of course is to have enough people come to make the makeover work!

Yes good idea too Orchid.
BG, please put in any requests for plants you would like, however common , extravagant or weird. Some of us I’m sure have neighbours and friends we can get cuttings from. My neighbour has some overgrowing Photinnia ( sp?) red tipped leaves hedge thingo.
PS, is the Botanic Gardens open at night ?

I’d be there too. It would be great. It would be a true garden party. I’m thinking of an alternative to being in attendance. I don’t know what as yet but something……………………..

nice idea.
i think all gardeners should cooperate and do chores as a team.
jane had a team helping her to pull bird netting over trees in last night’s programme.
travel is a problem but i would like your see your place.
mid winter means strawbs, broad beans, peas are planted in the vege patch.
