It is worse than a bad joke. All the containers have gone up in price but there not only isn’t any place to return them to the whole system looks to be bound to fail even if they do roll out more collection points. In the old days you took the bottles back to the shop where you bought them and they’d simplly hand them back to the suppliers. This scheme is total rubbish.

Bottles and cans, cartons have all increased in price at the shop to cover for the cost of reimbursement but there is no way that people can return these comntainers for reimbursement.

I note that one local shop owner has announced that if you bought it at his store, he will reimburse his customers the deposit on the containers and take the responsibility of getting his money back later. Woolies and Coles IGA and Aldi etc, should all have had collection points in place before they hiked the price.

That’s the other stupid part about it. We don’t want bitcoins. We don’t want a return and ear card… We want our ten cent coins.

Ah,that would explain why I didn’t know what it was. It’s N.S.W. I think SA still have bottle returns. Not here in Victoria though.

Who pays the return? Manufacturer or govt?

This is true. If and when Victoria does it, I hope they do it the way South Australia did. Nobody should try to emulate the NSW debacle.

First the Govt charges the retailer who passes the cost on to the consumer, then the Governemt is meant to reimburse the customer. I haven’t bothered to look into whether the Government has set up an independent conytractor to facilitate this or not because I’m likley to refill my bottles with water and tell them to go fuck themselves about selling me any more bottles.

government here.

most of our metro recycling centres are run through the scouts, but most larger country towns have their own council run depots

As a youth I actually made good money cleaning up the bottles that people threw away at the football etc., on weekends. But only because I got cash for every bottle. I don’t want a thermal printed receipt that says someone might pay me if they can read it.

Go back to using glass and ban plastics from packaging

If the industry created a new glass that is lighter than plastic, that would be good.

or a new plastic that is totally recyclable

or crush the existing glass in storage and mix it in with materials to make new glass.

Shudder. Broken glass is a much more serious health risk than broken plastic.
I was seriously injured working in a place that recycled glass bottles when I stepped on a broken one.

Modern plastics are damn good.

Modern plastics are only good if they are all recycled. OK I’ve trodden on broken glass too but it can be avoided. Why were you working in a glass recycling factory without adequate footwear?

As it is, the recyclers are going to get all the deposit money because most of us who are now paying more to put it in the recycling bin have no way to collect the deposit back.

SA recycle more than 80% of plastic because of their return and earn schemes. Qld is about to implement the same deal. The customer pays 10c more for their drink and when the bottle is returned, they receive 10c back. It adds up. SA have been doing it for 40 years and lead the country in reducing waste. Their recyclables are also hand sorted, reducing contamination by organic sand other rubbish such as plastic lids. Recycled glass from SA is highly sought after because of this high quality.

Woolies has also committed to having bins for soft plastic recycling in all their stores by June 30 next year. These soft plastics will be recycled into strong plastic furniture and playground equipment. Coles already have these bins in most of their stores. Soft plastics include shopping bags and cling wrap. Qld will be plastic bag free by mid next year.
