Subject: Hookpod protects hungry birds from longline fishing
>>Longline fisheries operations may catch a lot of fish, but they also sometimes catch endangered seabirds such as albatross. Several years ago, a group of marine conservationists began work on a product that was designed to keep the birds from getting caught. It’s known as the Hookpod, and a recent international study has concluded that it really works.<<
A win, win situation that could reduce the likelihood of some of our large seabirds going extinct.

That looks simple, put the hooks too low in the water for the birds to reach.
I thought longline fishing had been banned because it was catching too many birds. Do I have that totally wrong?

Too large an industry and practiced by many countries to close it down.

If you want to eat fish, why don’t you grow your own? or catch your own?

No. I was referring to the you who buys fish caught on long lines or with bottom trawers and etc. Then complains about how it kills albatross or is overjoyed that there is another way to flog the oceans to death.

Well it is silly to to say “You” in a small forum such as this, when the rest of the world are eating fish caught this way.

Yes, we are all bastards.
We eat or we starve? Do we allow morals to interfere?
There were two old Italians walking through the desert, getting hungrier and thirstier by the minute.
One says to the other, “I can’t stand it any more, I’m going to cut my dick off and eat it”.
The other says “No No, think of the woman think of the woman”.
The other quitens for a while but before long says the same thing and gets the same answer. This goes on for a day and eventually the first man says I can’t stand it anymore because I’m never going to see a woman if I’m dead.
The other man sys, “you don’t get it do you. If you think of the woman it will get big and we can both have some”.

Sounds typical of so many opal miners and otherwise Australians of the inland.
