When we moved to Darwin in the 50s we went on the Ghan so we could see some of central Australia & get the car to Darwin.
I think the train only ran from Port Augusta to Larrimah.

Any idea what they mean by “the full journey”?
First there was the afghan camel trains.
Then the old Ghan
Then the construction of the new Ghan on concrete sleepers that went the whole way through, but was for freight only
Then the passenger Ghan
Are all four stages coved? I’ve got no interest in the last stage – it’s just another Indian-Pacific.

Drank quite a bit. The bar closed at 10, but we we asked if we wanted any take-away, that was put in a bag with some ice and we kept sitting and drinking exactly where we’d been.

Someone was being intelligent there:
‘Hmm…rules say that the bar has to close at ten. They don’t say that the drinking has to stop then…’

Years ago one of the American cable TV companies had a spare channel that they weren’t using so they put a camera in front of a fish tank and let it play live. A few years later they decided to use the channel for something and took the fish tank off air. Huge kerfuffle followed and it was quickly restored :)

Was watching old mate Portillo doing his American rail journeys thing. It seemed back in the day lots of tycoons and millionaires had their own private carriage which the rail company would haul wherever they needed to go. Days before private jets.

There was a type of morris they usef to drive on the tracks..
Had a wierd roofline as the rear seats were raised to fit the rear axle in with train wheels. Had to jack it up in the middle and drag it to turn it around

Return of the Ghan.
Was looking for a good train line for a sequel, so typed “most boring train journey” into Google.
Unfortunately, the first entry, and 7 of the top 9, are “The Ghan: the full journey.”
Joanna Lumley has already done the Trans Siberian railway.
There has been a TV program about the Indian Pacific.
And other train journeys such as Melbourne to Ballarat are too short to make good sequels.
How about Brisbane to Cairns?

Oh God. Good choice. I read a book about the making of the Gun Barrel Highway, by Len Beadell.
It’s one of the best books on Australiana I’ve ever read, especially the section about the setting off of an atomic bomb. Exceedingly readable, informative and frequently humorous.

I worked north of the Coyote mine, just in WA. Found a 1.8 km long, up to 10 metre wide quartz vein carrying around 12 grams per tonne. Interestingly, it was in the Gardiner Sandstone, the younger rocks overlying the Tanami metamorphics.

No. Not at all. Isolated, like in the Tanami, if big enough and on the surface, 3 g/T would fall over the line. 12 g/t would fly for underground.
A cubic metre weighs ~2.8 T, so you are suggesting around 2.5 oz/T. That’s a ridiculously rich vein. A million tons of that would be a terrific little mine.

On the Ovens river a couple of diggers started a rush by picking and I mean literally, up 36 ouces in a cubic metre. Stories like this are what start goldrushes.

Sadly in a land where we are supposed to be free, any place that we might play is apparently owned by someone else.
