You know that nasty wound I had on my shin last year that required anti-Bs and all those dressings and finally healed beautifully?
It’s suddenly gone nasty again, over the last week or so.
How and why should an apparently healed wound unheal itself?

Shrapnel.
It’s bloody hard to find anything on this with Google because of the metaphorical “opening old wounds” etc.
There’s stuff about surgical wounds reopening but haven’t found anything yet about ordinary ones.
scurvy

I had a drainage tube inserted after one of the abdominal surgeries I had. Years later I noticed a redness and a bit of pain where the scar was. Of course I scratched it and this plug of strange stuff oozed out.
Hope that helps.
I should add, it’s coincided with fluid build-up in my feet and sometimes painfully sensitive skin on the shins.
Sitting down too much is strongly implicated, but there are presumably other factors involved.

I think we need a photo.
Plus WB&D is required.

And a similar thing happened with an old wound on the other shin that occurred when I was 18 – it still went a bit nasty now and then many years after apparently healing.

I don’t want to take a snap of a depressing thing like that.
The sorest bit is actually just under the main patch of healed skin. Also some to the left and above that patch, surrounded by a general redness.
Also, I’ve had a reddish discolouration of both shins for years, which I’ve been assuming is some harmless rashy type of thing.
Anyway I’ll see the GP about it early next week.
Don’t want it to get majorly infected again.
Sounds like a tooma.
Cellulitis?

Perhaps you should consult a physician.

Don’t think so. This is basically a re-activated wound.

I’m in the dark here:
How did the original wound occur?
I fell over at the tip and the shin was grazed/gashed on dirty gravel.
No idea.
I’ll have a guess.
Maybe bacteria from the original wound got trapped somehow in the healing process, something has now changed freeing up that bacteria?
>>Circulatory problems can also hinder the body’s healing process and cause venous leg ulcers to form.
According to Dr. Tim Kenny on Patient.info, ulcers on the legs can appear because the blood can’t effectively flow back up the body. As the blood collects in the leg, it causes swelling, thickening, and damage to the skin.10 <<
>>Swelling is a common symptom of poor blood circulation. For example, swelling is common in the legs of people who suffer from circulation problems because of poor blood flow from your legs back to your heart (this is called edema). Or swelling could be a sign of heart disease where the heart can’t circulate enough blood around the body.
PubMed Health explains that the swelling happens because blood builds up around the feet and ankles and forces fluid from the blood vessels into the surrounding tissue. Heart-related circulation problems may also cause abdominal swelling.11 <<

8-year-old boy dies from flesh-eating bacteria after falling off bike
It might well be a circulatory issue
definitely follow up with that above mentioned doctor appointment.

My guess, too. Just because the surface has healed, it doesn’t automatically mean that all the bacteria within the wound are dead – they could be just held in stasis.

Car, can you find a way to elevate the leg so it’s above the hip? Also, compression and a generic anti-inflam would be a good idea. If the wound is open, it will benefit from a clean with a gentle antiseptic (Detol diluted at 1:20 is perfect) and a sterile non-stick dressing.
If you start to feel pale, cool, clammy, dizzy, sick, rapid heart rate or breathing, call an Ambulance.
Obviously, the Internet (and this forum in particular) holds all the world’s wisdom about all known medical conditions, but if you want a second opinion, try:

I’ve quite recently (since that wound apparently healed) had routine blood tests which didn’t reveal anything to be concerned about.
All results within normal range.

I cut my leg open with a saw some years ago. After some stitches it healed OK but there must have been some infection trapped inside as it got lumps of pus under the stitch holes. Not a problem & not sore or spreading, no redness or lymph swelling. It flares up every now & again.
Some time in the future I will probably have to go on to antibiotics for something else(I’m pretty clumsy) & they will clear it up.

I was going to suggest that.
Stress can do horrendous things to one’s body, as can age.
