blow me down if you’re not a genius at getting those smiling portraits.
my wife spent 30mins perusing all 170+ photos – and she was silent the whole time – which must be the longest silent spell in her life. LOL
brilliant – we’ve got a classy forum here!

There are some brilliant fotos there PM. I love your portraits but I love your scenes too. The bird on the power lines with moon blew me away. We are very fortunate on here to be able to view New Guinea so well.
I’ll be photobucketing some others for your perusal in the next day or two….
Or three or four?
WOW!
SERIOUSLY WOW!!
Ever thought of submitting some of these to National Geographic, becoming a professional photographer or entering any photography comps, PM?
You have an amazing talent!
I feel so unworldly now…

seriously, thank you hfb, I wouldn’t know how to begin submitting to Nat Geo or similar… I once framed a photo and sold it at an art exhibition here in Moresby!!! That blew me away, that someone was willing to shell out some hard earned greens for a picture…
The people on the Karawari were gorgeous, and yet they probably see plenty of cameras despite its remoteness.
just uploading three new pics :)
Thoroughly enjoyed your photos – as usual! :) Thank you PM.
Cheers Cackles :)

Okay, here is the ultimate PNG Gardening residence, nice view overlooking the river, on high enough ground not to get swamped, a back yard ideal in the production of blood n bone (ask me later) and best of all, a shade house for growing orchids!

Sorry! That’s the orchid itself… here’s the property…

and here’s the Orchid most grown in this area “Sepik Blue”

and it is always good to have some butterflies helping out with pollination…

but watch out for the moths.

and the beetles are breeding like rabbits…

but a lizard in the garden will keep the bug number down.

and here’s a Frangidaisy or is it a Daisypani?

nice PM :)
I could handle that homestead I think… if it were located somewhere more temperate!

Ditto…the humidity of the last few days has just about done me in…add the odd hot flush and it’s a nightmare. BTW forgot to say g’day to everyone. Have just arrived home.
Great photos, PM, love the flowers and insects. That homestead looks terrific, with a lovely view too!

I’m surprised that orchids like B&B. lol. I suppose there is an abattoir there or something.

It seems to grow well anyway. Would that be an Ipomea behind it? The fine foliage one.

That poor old butterfly has been around for a while. Lovely red hibiscus.

I’d like to have seen that one close up..in person.

Copulating on a croton. LOL.
Thanks for that PM. Better late than never.

Unfortunately the Missionaries removed most of the traditional Spirit Houses along the Sepik, but they are making a comeback with some communities believing that God and their traditional beliefs can be worshipped together, so some Villages now have a Church and a Haus Tambauran (Spirit House), and only the fellas can go into the spirit house.
In this picture this is almost a spirit house, and I think the plan is to turn it into one, currently it is more of a man house for debate and deliberation. Once they get some good decent carvings inside, it will then be known as a spirit house.
The BnBone story, well behind this house, where I stood to take the photos, were a series of mystical stones to which a young man being initiated, wasn’t a true man until he took the life of someone else, and he would then spill this blood onto these stones. They are now known as Bloodstones and in some of the Villages, initiated men would often have their bloodstone in the front yard. These villagers were traditionally cannibals and would often display the skulls of their enemies in their spirit houses. I have a shot of some skulls from one of the guys I met.
The initiation rites in the Sepik are pretty horrific and it was interesting to see the crocodile skin carvings on a young lady in the village, apparently even some of the ladies are allowed to be initiated, but they don’t score the complete treatment, but there were some interesting scars on display. A good friend of mine here in Moresby has his skin carved into a pattern that looks like crocodile skin, he is a Master carver, and he carved a nice shield for me that I am currently arranging treatment so Customs can let me bring it home…

morning dinetta and vg.
7mm of rain – all gone now.
cooler days and less wind make for pleasant living. when the wind dies down you can hear the magpies oigling and frogs croaking much clearer. i have stopped maintaining the pool so the frogs have invaded it big time.

Morning Pepe. 5mls o/n here again. Things are kinda dampish. Not that we are getting a lot of rain but we aren’t getting much sunlight to dry things up. Humidity is still thick so there is sure to be more wet stuff. I say all this but I’m not really complaining.

complaining makes no difference. i am using mains water to dampen my winter patch because i want the worms to return to the soil.
you guys have had a bit of rain but are all your dams full yet?

I’ll ask him for a photo, his skin has a series of cuts which were then beaten over a series of a month, with sometimes dirt and ash rubbed into the sore, and they deliberately turned them into keloid scars. This raised scarring is in a pattern that resembles crocodile skin, which starts from his buttocks, goes up over each shoulder and then down his pecs and around his nipples. There’s also a little on the sides of his stomach.
The carving he made is timber and polished, so customs should be pretty sweet with it, there’s no borers in it and it is a well seasoned lump of timber.

The answer to that is “no.” I understand that there is another cyclone somewhere off Mackay so maybe we will get our share this time.
